Beginning with founders Walt and Roy O. Disney—who both served during World War I—the Walt Disney Company has long admired and celebrated U.S. military service. As Disney celebrates its 100-year history, that admiration continues to shine in new and heartfelt ways, including the upcoming opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Walt Disney World Resort on June 28.

A Deeper Look into Tiana’s Father James
Fans of The Princess and the Frog may recall that Tiana’s father, James, was a World War I veteran. Now, Walt Disney Imagineering has expanded James’ story inside the attraction in partnership with Walt Disney Animation Studios. Their goal was to honor both the character and military families visiting Disney Parks.

Ted Robledo, Executive Creative Director for Walt Disney Imagineering, explained:
“We looked for inspiration for how we could best expand on his backstory in a way that honored the military families who visit our parks.”
To achieve authenticity, the creative team referenced real photos of soldiers from the 369th Regiment—one of the first African American units in the American Expeditionary Forces. This courageous regiment earned the prestigious Croix de Guerre medal from the French government for their heroism.

A Personal Tribute from the Imagineering Team
For Charita Carter, Executive Creative Producer and project lead, this story holds special meaning. As the daughter of a career U.S. Air Force officer, Charita has a deep appreciation for military families.
“Growing up in a military family is a wonderful and challenging experience that we hoped to pay tribute to inside our newest attraction,” she said. “In this expanded story, you will see just how much Tiana is proud of her father and his military service. Just like so many of the families who visit us are proud of their military hero.”
This moving tribute highlights the emotional depth and historical care Disney brings to its storytelling.

Disney’s Broader Commitment to Military Recognition
Disney Parks continue to celebrate military service beyond Tiana’s Father Military History. Guests can witness daily flag retreat ceremonies, see ferry boats named for veterans, and explore special exhibits honoring those who served.
This includes the President George W. Bush Portraits of Courage exhibit, opening June 9 at EPCOT’s American Adventure Pavilion. Later in June, Walt Disney World will host the 2024 DOD Warrior Games, spotlighting the strength and resilience of military athletes.

A Legacy of Service and Storytelling
Tiana’s Father Military History is a meaningful addition to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, weaving pride and real-world connections into the attraction’s vibrant narrative. The result honors both Disney storytelling and the military heroes who inspire it.
When the ride opens on June 28, take time to reflect on this deeper layer of storytelling—a tribute to bravery, family, and enduring service.
