History of EPCOT’s Voices of Liberty Revealed

Since EPCOT’s opening day on October 1, 1982, the Voices of Liberty have been filling The American Adventure rotunda with harmonies that uplift and inspire. Performing in period attire and arranged in a circle under the acoustically perfect dome, this a cappella ensemble has become a beloved part of EPCOT’s cultural fabric.

The group was founded and originally directed by composer and arranger Derric Johnson, whose vision helped shape a musical experience that would become synonymous with EPCOT itself. Johnson brought his philosophy of connection and encouragement to every performance, creating not just concerts, but moments of meaning.

An Opening Day to Remember

One of Johnson’s fondest memories from the group’s early days comes from EPCOT’s pre-opening events. After a performance, a guest approached the group to express how moving the music had been. That guest was Diane Disney Miller, Walt Disney’s eldest daughter. Her kind words about her father’s appreciation for the performance cemented the group’s legacy on day one.

From those first notes, it was clear that the Voices of Liberty were more than just singers—they were storytellers, cultural ambassadors, and, above all, people connectors.

People, Passion, and Performance

The Voices of Liberty quickly became known for their unique approach: singing directly to guests on the rotunda floor rather than from a stage. Their close, interactive performances often featured meet-and-greets, warm handshakes, and playful musical numbers involving audience participation.

Johnson emphasized music that carried messages of hope and joy. Songs like “Skip to My Lou” and “Oh! Susanna” brought smiles to children and adults alike, while deeper performances such as “Let There Be Peace on Earth” included sign language to connect with guests of all abilities.

Stories That Shaped the Legacy

Two songs in particular stand out in Johnson’s recollection. The first, “Shenandoah,” was initially considered too soft for Disney’s upbeat atmosphere. But a rehearsal in the still-unfinished rotunda—surrounded by construction noise—proved otherwise. As the group sang, workers stopped to listen. The resulting silence and applause confirmed the song’s place in the repertoire, and it went on to become the ensemble’s most requested piece.

The second, “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” played a pivotal role in extending the group’s original six-month contract. When Ronald Reagan heard the group perform the hymn during a visit to The American Adventure, he stood still and later expressed how deeply moved he was. That moment led to increased support for the group and a doubling of their daily performances.
