Honoring Disney Custodial Cast Members and Their Magical Water Art

Ever wondered why Disney parks always feel spotless and magical? Thanks to more than 4,000 dedicated custodial cast members who work daily to keep the parks, resorts, and venues looking their best. On National Custodian Appreciation Day, we highlight one of their most creative contributions—Disney custodial water art.

Art That Disappears, But Never Fades

While custodians tackle essential daily tasks, many go a step further by creating spontaneous, smile-inducing works of art. With nothing more than a broom, water, and pavement, these talented cast members surprise guests by drawing beloved Disney characters right on the ground. Known as water art, this magical tradition has become a fan-favorite detail of a day in the parks.

Joel’s Steps to Creating Disney Water Art

Custodial artist Joel shared how he brings characters to life in just three steps:

Step 1: Sketch It Out
Before ever touching the pavement, Joel studies his subject. He sketches the character on paper, memorizing lines and shapes that define each personality.

Step 2: Practice on Pavement
Using water and a broom, Joel practices his strokes on the ground. His trick for a perfect circle? Hold the broom steady and turn your body in a full circle.

Step 3: Showtime for Guests
Once he’s ready, Joel takes his art to the stage—the theme park walkways. Within moments, a small crowd forms to watch a familiar character take shape. When the drawing’s done, it begins to fade—but the memory lasts much longer.

Joel doesn’t keep the magic to himself. He helps train other custodians in this unique art form. After a few lessons and a demonstration, those who master the skill earn their official Custodial Water Artist certification.

Magic in the Everyday

Next time you visit a Disney park, take a moment to thank a custodial cast member. And keep your eyes on the ground—you never know when a favorite Disney character might appear in water and vanish like pixie dust. It’s the kind of magic only Disney can deliver, and the Disney custodial water art tradition is one more way cast members make every visit unforgettable.
