We’re just weeks away from the highly anticipated return of Moana—and Disney has released brand-new details that reveal what makes Moana 2 a must-see theatrical event. Hitting theaters on November 27, the sequel reunites Moana (Auli‘i Cravalho) with the lovable demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) and introduces a fresh crew of canoe-mates voiced by Hualālai Chung, David Fane, and Rose Matafeo.
Behind the Scenes with Producers and Cultural Advisors
In an exclusive interview with D23, producers Yvett Merino and Christina Chen shared how excited they were to return to this beloved world.
“Moana stands for strength, heart, and adventure,” said Chen. “She’s grown since the first film, and in Moana 2, we see her evolve into a powerful leader.” Merino added, “It takes hundreds of artists, engineers, and storytellers to bring this vision to life. It’s a joy to help tell her next great story.”
The team also emphasized the importance of cultural authenticity. Two members of the Oceanic Cultural Trust, Kalikolehua Hurley and Lāiana Kanoa-Wong, discussed their vital role in shaping the narrative and visuals.
“I started with the first film and was honored to return,” said Hurley. “Collaborating with navigators like Nainoa Thompson was one of the most rewarding parts.”
Kanoa-Wong added, “We introduced the crew to our traditions—teaching rope-making, navigation, and blessings to help ground the visuals in our cultural roots.”
Exploring Deeper Themes in Moana 2
The film explores deeper emotional territory while celebrating the natural world. “Moana learns to pause and listen—to nature, to herself,” Hurley noted. “That’s something many Pacific cultures deeply value.”
Kanoa-Wong concluded, “This story reminds us we’re all leaders of our own lives. Moana’s journey reflects the growth we all experience. We hope it inspires audiences everywhere.”
