Disney Debuts Heartwarming Holiday Short in Collaboration with Taika Waititi

Disney and Taika Waititi Unveil Heartwarming Holiday Short: The Boy & The Octopus

Disney is once again proving the power of storytelling this season with The Boy & The Octopus, a touching new holiday short created in collaboration with Academy Award® winner Taika Waititi. This charming tale captures the magic of childhood friendship and holiday wonder, brought to life with Disney’s signature heart and humor.

A Curious Friendship Begins

Set during a seaside vacation, the story follows a young boy who unexpectedly befriends an octopus that’s latched onto his head. After bringing the quirky creature home, he introduces it to the joys of his everyday life — wielding a Jedi lightsaber, playing with his Buzz Lightyear action figure, and mapping out Santa Claus’ global journey on his bedroom wall.

The bond between the boy and his new friend grows deeper as they experience the holidays together, with the octopus cleverly tucked under a Mickey Mouse beanie during their adventures.

Heart, Humor, and Hidden Surprises

While watching The Santa Clause (1994), the boy realizes the octopus longs to explore the world. Inspired by that moment, he makes a plan to help his friend discover all the wonders beyond their home. Their friendship is a reminder that it’s the small, meaningful moments that truly define the holiday season.

Fans will also enjoy spotting Disney easter eggs throughout the short, with subtle nods to beloved films like Moana (2016), Lilo & Stitch (2002), and Toy Story (1995)

Waititi’s Touch on a Disney Classic

“This story connects the joy, goodwill, and emotions of the holidays with the timeless sensibilities of Disney films,” said Taika Waititi. “Only Disney could make something like this… with me.”

This marks Waititi’s latest creative collaboration with The Walt Disney Company.  Following his work on Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022),, Jojo Rabbit, and Next Goal Wins.
