Moana 2: Behind the Scenes with the Cast and Creators

Moana Returns for a New Adventure

Disney fans rejoice—Moana 2 is officially here! The highly anticipated sequel to the original 2016 hit brings back fan favorites Moana and Maui while introducing an exciting new cast and even more stunning visuals. Recently, D23 offered a behind-the-scenes look at how the film came together, featuring insights from the animation team and creative leads.

In an image from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana 2, Moana (voiced by Auli‘i Cravalho) is on her canoe, in the ocean, looking back at a flotilla of Kakamora. She is holding ropes in both hands while glancing over her shoulder, with a determined look on her face; another rope connects the canoe to the Kakamora.

Moana: Stronger, Bolder, More Grounded

In Moana 2, our heroine has grown. Head of animation Amy Smeed notes, “Moana is still the same genuine, caring person. But now she’s a leader, and that means showing her strength in the way she moves and carries herself.”

Co-head Kevin Webb adds, “It’s been three years since her first voyage. She’s more grounded, more confident. She’s not racing to leave home this time—she’s leaving something important behind.”

Daniel Arriaga, the film’s character art director, notes subtle physical changes, including a new red costume symbolizing leadership and more voluminous hair.

Smeed has reddish brown hair and wears a dark pink sweater; Webb has short brown hair and wears a denim button-down shirt over a brown T-shirt; and Arriaga has short black hair and wears glasses, and is wearing a tan jacket over a lighter-tan T-shirt.

Meet Simea, Moana’s Little Sister

A standout addition is Simea, Moana’s adorable little sister. Voiced by Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Simea was inspired by the real-life children of the animators. “Her hair, her teeth, the way she speaks—it all comes from authentic family moments,” says Webb.

In a visual development character lineup image from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana 2, Loto (voiced by Rose Matafeo), Kele (voiced by David Fane), Moni (voiced by Hualālai Chung), and Moana (voiced by Auli‘i Cravalho) can be seen from left to right, on a white background; in addition, Pua the pig, Hei Hei the rooster, and a Kakamora can be seen near Moana to the right of the image. Each character is seen in an emblematic pose; Loto is holding a tool, Kele has his arms crossed, Moni is smiling, and Moana looks determined.

A Crew Fit for the Open Sea

Moana won’t be journeying alone. She’s joined by:

  • Moni (voiced by Hualālai Chung): A big-hearted storyteller who adores Maui.
  • Loto (voiced by Rose Matafeo): A 16-year-old inventor with short hair and gap teeth.
  • Kele (voiced by David Fane): A grumpy elder farmer with surprising talents and expressive gestures.

Each character has a unique look, personality, and animation approach that brings them vividly to life.

In an image from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana 2, Moana (voiced by Auli‘i Cravalho) is surrounded by her crew (l-r) Kele (voiced by David Fane), Moni (voiced by Hualālai Chung), and Loto (voiced by Rose Matafeo) as they stand on their canoe; all four are looking up at something off camera, with concerned looks on their faces. Moana is holding onto an oar, and Loto is holding onto some sort of axe-type tool.

Animation Innovation

The animation team had to tackle new challenges, including animating entire weather systems like tidal waves and tornadoes. “I never thought I’d be concerned with ‘tornado continuity,'” laughs Webb. Tools like custom rope rigs helped streamline animation and boost realism.

Moni (voiced by Hualalai Chung), Loto (voiced by Rose Matafeo), and Moana (voiced by Auli‘i Cravalho) stand as a group on their boat, looking up with trepidation at an offscreen enemy. Moana is holding out her oar defensively.

 A Story About Connection

Above all, Moana 2 is a film about relationships—between sisters, between cultures, and between old and new generations. “It’s a deeper story this time,” says Smeed. “The stakes are higher, and the growth is more personal.”

In a watercolor-style visual development image created for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana 2 by Kevin Nelson, Moana is seen in the distance standing on an atoll next to her canoe. Toward the middle of the image, at the end of the atoll, is a cluster of greenery; to the left of the image, in the foreground, is a portion of the main island with a palm tree and more greenery. The sea is very blue, and fluffy white clouds are seen throughout the sky.

Moana 2 is now playing in theaters. Prepare to sail farther than ever before!
