Taika Waititi shared what drew him to The Boy & The Octopus, saying,
“It’s a simple tale of a boy on holiday who goes swimming and meets an unexpected friend in the least expected place.”
This short film tells the heartwarming story of a lonely boy who forms a friendship with a curious octopus. It’s a celebration of connection across worlds, told with Disney’s signature magic.
Bringing the Magic to Life
The production team worked tirelessly to craft every detail of the film. Here are a few highlights from the making of The Boy & The Octopus:
A Melodic Masterpiece
The emotional journey of the story is enhanced by a live 60-piece orchestra, performing a beautiful rendition of “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, the music was adapted to fit each emotional beat of the story.
Picture-Perfect Locations
Filming took place on a scenic beach in Mallorca, Spain, which provided the ideal setting for the boy’s seaside vacation. Additional scenes in Prague helped expand the film’s visual storytelling with contrast and warmth.
Meet “Blub Blub,” the Octopus
The team affectionately nicknamed the octopus Blub Blub and brought it to life using cutting-edge visual effects created by Untold Studios. Advanced animation and VFX work gave Blub Blub its expressive movements, color-changing skin, and curious personality.
Overcoming VFX Challenges
Creating a believable octopus wasn’t easy. As Adam Droy from Untold Studios explained,
“Octopuses can shapeshift, they can change color on their skin. We built in all sorts of things.”
These complex elements made Blub Blub both lifelike and emotionally engaging, capturing hearts with every movement.
A Disney Short Filled With Heart
The Boy & The Octopus reminds us that friendship can be found in the most unexpected places. Its success is a testament to Disney’s commitment to powerful storytelling and creative innovation.
