Behind the Music of Moana 2: New Songs and Exclusive Insights

Adventure returns to the sea—and to the big screen—with Moana 2, the latest chapter from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Released over Thanksgiving weekend, the sequel continues Moana’s journey three years after her first voyage. When her ancestors call her toward uncharted waters in Oceania, she sets out on a new adventure with Maui and an unexpected crew of allies.

The soul of this story lives in its music. Grammy Award-winning songwriting duo Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, known for The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical, composed five new songs for the film. Returning composers Opetaia Foa‘i and Mark Mancina also contributed three songs, continuing the musical legacy that began in the original film.

In a recent interview with D23, Barlow and Bear shared what it was like to collaborate with Disney’s creative team and return to the world of Motunui.  You can find the full D23 Interview Here.

A Heroine’s Musical Evolution

Barlow and Bear were drawn to Moana’s journey of self-discovery, an arc that continues to evolve in this sequel. Bear noted that Moana is no longer 16 but nearly 20, and the music reflects her growth. From vulnerability to newfound strength, Moana’s voice carries the emotional weight of her expanded worldview.

Barlow emphasized Moana’s leadership and maturity, and how the soundtrack gave her the opportunity to express those qualities musically. New characters and cultural insights also allowed the duo to explore fresh voices and harmonies.

Sina is holding Simea in her arms, and Simea is reaching out to Moana; they are all smiling at each other. Lush island greenery is seen behind them.

Cultural Collaboration and Creative Chemistry

One of the most meaningful parts of the process was collaborating with Opetaia Foa‘i and Mark Mancina. Bear described their work as “magical,” noting how their musical ideas brought new energy to the score.

Barlow and Bear also praised the film’s directors—David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller—for their dedication to honoring Pacific Island culture and storytelling. Every detail, from visual motifs to vocal phrasing, received thoughtful care and research.

Auli‘i Cravalho’s return as the voice of Moana added an essential layer of authenticity. Barlow called her “poised and a joy to work with,” while Bear highlighted the chemistry they all shared as artists close in age to the character.

Together, they shaped performances that brought each song to life—reflecting both personal growth and deep emotional resonance.

Moments to Remember

Among their standout memories, the songwriting duo shared stories about debuting their music to the Disney team and receiving unexpected praise from Dwayne Johnson, who performs a new Maui song. That magical moment, and many others, reinforced just how special this project had become.

As Bear put it, the honor of contributing to Moana’s story—and to Disney Animation’s legacy—was unforgettable.
