The Walt Disney Studios has achieved a monumental milestone in 2024, surpassing $2 billion at the domestic box office. This marks Disney as the first studio to reach this threshold in 2024 and only the second studio to achieve such a feat since 2019 — a record Disney also holds from 2022. Globally, the studio is set to surpass $5 billion in earnings this weekend with the debut of Mufasa: The Lion King and the highly anticipated Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.
The studio’s box office success has been powered by its unparalleled storytelling and creative excellence, delivering three of the top five highest-grossing films domestically in 2024. Among these standout titles, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine broke records as the highest-grossing R-rated film, and Disney Animation’s Moana 2 shattered opening weekend records over Thanksgiving.
Reflecting on the year’s achievements, Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, shared: “We had a great year in 2024 and will lead the industry once again at the box office thanks to the exceptional performance of Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Moana 2, and other big releases like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Alien: Romulus.” He added, “Our teams remain focused on quality while ensuring the right mix of content for theatrical and streaming audiences. The results speak for themselves.”
As audiences prepare for the holiday season, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King opens in theaters this weekend. Directed by Barry Jenkins and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the film offers a fresh perspective on one of Disney’s most iconic stories. Bergman noted, “The story is so surprising and full of heart. It’s a visual masterpiece, and I am excited for people to finally have the chance to experience it.”
