Disney’s Costume Exhibit Arrives in South Carolina

A Legendary Exhibit Takes the Stage Again

The Walt Disney Archives’ celebrated exhibit, Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume, is on the move once more! After debuting at D23 Expo 2019, the exhibit has toured the country, dazzling fans with more than 70 iconic costumes from decades of Disney storytelling. Starting May 3, 2025, it will open at the South Carolina State Museum, with early access for D23 Members.

Behind the Seams of Disney’s Iconic Looks

The exhibit showcases the work of Hollywood’s top costume designers, including Academy Award® winners like Sandy Powell and Disney Legend Colleen Atwood. These costumes, worn by stars such as Bette Davis, Glenn Close, Julie Andrews, and Angelina Jolie, represent nearly 60 years of Disney’s film and television history.

Visitors can explore how costumes are brought to life, from concept art to construction, through written accounts and firsthand quotes from top designers. From Mary Poppins’s elegance to Queen Narissa’s villainy, every stitch tells a story.

Explore the Heroes, Villains, and In-Between

The exhibit is thoughtfully divided into three categories: heroes, villains, and the fascinating characters who fall somewhere in between. Highlights include:

  • Mary Poppins’ costume from Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
  • Queen Narissa’s gown from Enchanted (2007)
  • Jack Sparrow’s gear from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)

Cinderella’s Workshop and Costume Evolution

A special gallery titled “Cinderella’s Workshop” explores different visual interpretations of Cinderella through the decades. From Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1997 version to Disney’s 2015 live-action film, each design reflects a different take on the iconic princess.
