Pixar is taking us back into Riley’s mind—and this time, we’re stepping right onto the set of her dreams. Dream Productions, a new four-episode series inspired by Inside Out and Inside Out 2, premieres December 11 on Disney+. The series expands the imaginative world of Riley’s subconscious with returning Emotions and a vibrant new cast.
A New Chapter in Riley’s Story
Dream Productions brings back Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear. Alongside them, a new dream team works behind the scenes in the whimsical studio first seen in Inside Out. Paula Persimmon (voiced by Paula Pell) leads the crew as an overworked but passionate director. She works closely with her talented assistant Janelle (voiced by Ally Maki), indie filmmaker Xeni (voiced by Richard Ayoade), and the commanding production head Jean (voiced by Maya Rudolph).
Dreams, Daydreams, and Nightmares
The show explores the creative chaos behind Riley’s subconscious, where dreams and daydreams are carefully produced—and sometimes disrupted by nightmares. Using a clever mockumentary style, Dream Productions adds fourth wall-breaking interviews and handheld-style cinematography never before seen in Pixar’s animated projects.
From Concept to Creation
According to producer Jaclyn Simon, the idea stemmed from curiosity about dreams themselves. “We’re fascinated by the universality of dreams,” she said. “Where do they come from? Who creates them?” The team consulted with dream researchers and explored the science of sleep to build the world from the inside out.
Humor Meets Heart
With fast-paced storytelling, behind-the-scenes tension, and even a scene-stealing dog named Melatonin “Mel.” Dream Productions captures the hilarity and heart of a creative team trying to keep Riley’s emotional balance intact. “Everything has to be about Riley,” said director Valerie LaPoint. “Trying to help her is what keeps the studio going.”
Expect laughs, relatable work-life moments, and a magical expansion of one of Pixar’s most emotionally rich universes.
