Disney has officially announced that It’s Tough to Be a Bug! at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will close permanently on March 17, 2025. This opening-day attraction has thrilled (and sometimes startled) guests since 1998 with immersive 3D effects, surprising in-theater moments, and the unforgettable Hopper animatronic.
Now, with Disney preparing for a new Zootopia-themed attraction, it’s time to take a look back at the history of It’s Tough to Be a Bug! and experience the full show one last time.
Watch the Full It’s Tough to Be a Bug! Experience
Since It’s Tough to Be a Bug! is closing soon, we captured the full theater experience so you can relive this Disney classic before it’s gone forever. Catch the Full in Theater experience below.
The History of It’s Tough to Be a Bug!
Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened on April 22, 1998—Earth Day. As one of the park’s original attractions, It’s Tough to Be a Bug! transported guests into the world of insects.
Interestingly, Imagineers developed the show before Pixar’s A Bug’s Life debuted in theaters. The attraction even appeared in the 1998 ABC special Animal Kingdom: The First Adventure, where Drew Carey teased what was inside the Tree of Life Theater. Yet, the special never mentioned A Bug’s Life. At the time, Disney had not acquired Pixar, making this collaboration unique.
Despite the omission, the show introduced guests to Flik, the friendly ant host. He guided the audience through a humorous yet realistic look at insect life. However, this wasn’t just a standard 3D movie. Disney Imagineers packed the theater with surprises, including:
✅ Fog effects simulating bug spray
✅ Simulated hornet stings poking guests from their seats
✅ Spiders dropping from the ceiling in complete darkness
✅ Bugs crawling under seats during the finale
Another highlight was Hopper, one of the most advanced animatronics of its time. Towering over the audience, the menacing grasshopper ensured that guests left with a new perspective on insects—or a new fear of them.
Why It’s Tough to Be a Bug! Was So Intense
Unlike MuppetVision 3D*, this show provided plenty of intense moments. Sudden darkness, jump scares, and crawling sensations startled many young guests. It wasn’t uncommon to see parents rushing toward the exits with frightened children. Due to this, Disney placed multiple warning signs outside the attraction.
Still, the attraction remained a rite of passage at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It surprised guests, sparked laughter, and left unforgettable memories for over 25 years. Personally, my favorite moment was the ‘smaller bugs’ exiting the theater at the end—always a fun crowd reaction!
What’s Replacing It’s Tough to Be a Bug!?
At the 2024 D23 Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney confirmed that It’s Tough to Be a Bug! would be replaced by a new Zootopia-themed attraction called Zootopia: Better Zoogether.
The current concept for the new “Zootopia” experience has guests visiting the different biomes you only glimpse in the film, traveling along with Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde and other characters.
Opening later in 2025, this new experience will transform the Tree of Life Theater into a world where “anyone can be anything.” While details remain limited, Disney has promised an immersive adventure featuring Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and more fan-favorite characters from Zootopia.
Final Chance to Experience It’s Tough to Be a Bug!
TIME’S UP! The last day to see It’s Tough to Be a Bug! at Disney’s Animal Kingdom was March 17, 2025. Since then, the attraction will close permanently as it begins its transformation into Zootopia: Better Zoogether.
