Star Command has spoken—big changes are coming to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom! The iconic Tomorrowland attraction is getting a high-tech upgrade with new ride vehicles, enhanced gameplay, and a brand-new character joining the mission. The updates are scheduled to debut in 2026, following a temporary closure in August 2025.

Whether you’re a veteran Space Ranger or a rookie ready to take aim, this newly enhanced mission promises an experience that’s more interactive, immersive, and engaging than ever before.
Meet “Buddy”—Your New Star Command Sidekick
As the journey begins, recruits will be greeted by Buddy, a cheerful new support-bot created by Walt Disney Imagineering in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios. Designed to help Space Rangers gear up for the adventure ahead, Buddy performs final system checks and offers helpful tips—plus a few laughs—before liftoff.
Buddy also gives riders a chance to practice with the attraction’s new interactive targets before blasting off to take on the Evil Emperor Zurg. His upbeat personality and helpful nature are sure to make him an instant fan favorite.
New Star Cruisers and Scoring Technology
Buzz’s ride vehicles are getting a sleek redesign inspired by Star Command’s signature look. The updated Star Cruisers will now include video monitors displaying real-time scores and mission data, making it easier to track your progress during the battle.

Handheld Blasters with Laser Precision
Say goodbye to the mounted blasters—each vehicle will now come equipped with handheld laser blasters, offering better aim and increased accuracy for all guests. These updated blasters include:
- Always-on lasers for visible aiming
- Two different colors per cruiser for team play
- New lighting, vibration, and sound effects for a fully immersive feel
These changes will especially help younger Space Rangers participate more actively, making it easier for everyone to rack up points—and take aim like a pro.

All-New Interactive Targets
The once-static “Z” targets are being replaced with high-tech, interactive models that light up and respond when hit. These new targets are just the beginning—Imagineers have hinted at even more surprises to come, with the updated tech laying the groundwork for future gameplay enhancements.

Imagineering Insights and Playtesting in Progress
According to Project Creative Director Justin DeTolla, the Space Ranger Spin upgrade has been in the works for quite some time. Recently, Imagineers hosted playtests of the new blasters and targets, helping the team refine gameplay and improve the guest experience.
“Everyone had a great time, and our team learned a lot,” said DeTolla. “It was exciting to see it all come to life in the field.”
These behind-the-scenes insights show how Disney uses real-world testing. To fine-tune every detail—ensuring the final product is truly out of this world.
Attraction Closure Begins August 2025
To prepare for this major transformation, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will temporarily close in August 2025. The updated version is set to reopen in 2026, marking the first confirmed new attraction experience for that year.
This long-anticipated update is sure to refresh one of Magic Kingdom’s most popular interactive rides. And we’ll be following every development as the galactic adventure evolves.

Our Thoughts: Could WDW’s Version Finally Beat Disneyland’s?
We’ve said it many times—Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters at Disneyland has long been the superior version of this attraction. But these new upgrades at Walt Disney World may just bridge that gap. The Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin Update is overdue, and a welcome update.

Dare we say… could the Magic Kingdom version become better than Disneyland’s? With handheld blasters, real-time scoring, interactive targets, and a new character, it just might. One thing’s for sure—the update is long overdue. I can’t wait to try the enhanced experience and earn our Galactic Hero badge once again.
