In 1999, a new collectible craze was born at Walt Disney World—one that would bring fans, collectors, and Disney enthusiasts together like never before. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Disney Pin Trading, a beloved tradition that has become an integral part of the Disney Parks experience worldwide.
The Origins of Pin Trading
While Disney had been selling collectible pins for decades, official Pin Trading began during the Millennium Celebration at Epcot in October 1999. Inspired by the success of Olympic pin trading, Disney introduced a system that allowed guests to trade pins with Cast Members and fellow visitors, creating an interactive experience beyond simply purchasing souvenirs.
The popularity of pin trading quickly spread across Disneyland Resort (2000), Tokyo Disneyland (2000), Disneyland Paris (2001), and eventually Hong Kong Disneyland and Shanghai Disney Resort. Each park developed its own exclusive pins, trading stations, and unique events, cementing the tradition as a global Disney phenomenon.
What Is Disney Pin Trading?
Pin Trading is an interactive experience where guests can swap official Disney pins with Cast Members and other guests. With thousands of pins in circulation, every trade adds an element of surprise and adventure to a Disney visit.
For those new to collecting, Disney offers starter sets that include a themed lanyard and a set of pins, perfect for beginners. Special Hidden pins, only available through trading, add an extra level of excitement. These limited-run collections feature small hidden Mickey symbols, making them a prized find among traders.
The Evolution of Pin Trading
Over the years, Disney has released thousands of unique pins, including:
- Limited Edition Pins – Special releases for events, anniversaries, and holidays.
- Hidden Mickey Pins – Exclusive pins that can only be traded for with Cast Members.
- Resort and Attraction Pins – Featuring unique designs representing different parks, rides, and experiences.
- Mystery Sets and Boxed Collections – Blind-box sets that keep collectors hunting for their favorites.
Pin Trading has also expanded beyond the parks, with exclusive online releases through shopDisney and special events dedicated to collectors.
A Family Tradition
For many fans, pin trading has become a family tradition. My own family has spent years hunting for the perfect pins, trading with Cast Members, and scouring lanyards for that one missing piece to complete a collection.
Some of my favorite memories are of my kids searching for Cast Members with yellow lanyards. Those were designated for kids-only trades. They took great joy in trading for pins they loved. Especially if it meant snagging one I had my eye on! While the influx of knock-off pins in recent years has made trading more challenging. Disney has done an excellent job of keeping the experience engaging—especially for younger collectors.
A Celebration of 25 Years
Throughout 2025, Disney will celebrate 25 years of Pin Trading with new product releases and special events across the parks. Whether you’re a veteran collector or a new trader. There’s never been a better time to join in the fun and create your own Disney pin-trading memories!
