Doctor Who has landed on Disney+, marking a thrilling new era for the iconic BBC series. The 2024 debut introduced a new generation to the time-traveling adventures of the Doctor, now portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education, Barbie). And with season 2 premiering April 12, 2025 fans old and new can look forward to even more epic journeys across time and space.
What Is Doctor Who?
For the uninitiated: The Doctor is a centuries-old alien from the planet Gallifrey who regenerates into new forms and travels the universe in the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension in Space). Along the way, the Doctor often teams up with human companions to face everything from galactic threats to historical mysteries.
Meet Belinda Chandra: The Doctor’s New Companion
Season 2 introduces Belinda Chandra, a nurse from London played by Varada Sethu (Andor). Together, she and the Doctor must navigate terrifying foes and cosmic obstacles on a journey to get Belinda home. Their dynamic promises to bring heart, humor, and depth to the new season.
“They really see each other as equals,” said Gatwa in an interview with D23. “The relationship forces them to relinquish control and support each other.”
Animation Meets Adventure
One of the most anticipated new episodes in season 2 is an animated adventure featuring a chaotic cartoon villain named Mr. Ring-a-Ding, voiced by Alan Cumming. Blending animation and live action, this episode is expected to be a hit with Disney fans.
“There’s something to love in every episode,” Sethu shared, highlighting the season’s variety and vibrancy.
Time Travel Meets Pop Culture
From an intergalactic song contest to mysterious threats across the multiverse, season 2 is packed with excitement. Fans can expect a mix of comedy, cosmic stakes, and dazzling visuals that reflect the best of Doctor Who and the imaginative flair of Disney+ storytelling.
Doctor Who Meets Disney: Dream Crossovers
When asked where they’d take the TARDIS within Disney’s world, Gatwa and Sethu didn’t hesitate. Sethu would travel to Moana’s island, while Gatwa would explore the world of The Lion King. Fun fact: “Rafiki” means “friend” in Swahili, which Gatwa proudly shared.
And for a dream companion? Sethu chose Genie from Aladdin for his fun and flair, while Gatwa stuck with Rafiki, calling him a guide who would keep the Doctor grounded.
