A First-of-Its-Kind Collaboration

For the first time, the legendary Sir David Attenborough partners with National Geographic to spotlight our oceans’ urgent challenges. Produced by Silverback Films and Open Planet Studios, this powerful documentary weaves together awe-inspiring cinematography and compelling science to tell the story of our planet’s most vital ecosystem — the ocean.

Timed with World Oceans Day and the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France, the film delivers a clarion call to action. It outlines how destructive practices like bottom trawling and overfishing harm delicate marine ecosystems.  At the same time, it reveals the remarkable potential for recovery when we take bold action.

A Journey Through Earth’s Undersea Wonders

In this cinematic journey, Attenborough explores vibrant kelp forests, coral reefs, and deep-sea habitats brimming with biodiversity. These connected ecosystems support marine life and play a vital role in stabilizing our climate. Despite their threats, these waters demonstrate extraordinary resilience when given the opportunity to heal.

From the bustling life beneath the waves to global efforts aimed at protection, the film presents stories of hope and action. Drawing from a lifetime of exploration, Attenborough reminds us that the ocean’s recovery is not only possible — it’s already underway in areas where protections exist.

A Message from Attenborough

“In this film, we share wonderful discoveries, uncover why our ocean is in such poor health, and, perhaps most importantly, show how it can bounce back to life,” said Sir David Attenborough. Now 98 years old, his message remains both urgent and deeply moving.

More Than a Documentary: A Movement

This film offers more than an extraordinary visual experience — it serves as a global wake-up call. Viewers are encouraged to become ocean stewards and support proven solutions that can regenerate marine life. Educators are invited to share the film in classrooms, museums, and conferences later this year through National Geographic Pristine Seas.

The documentary also aligns with the Revive Our Ocean initiative, which empowers communities to protect coastal marine areas. While Attenborough is not directly involved with the campaign, the co-production highlights the importance of global collaboration in ocean conservation.
