Live-Action Stitch: Mischief, Heart, and Global Appeal

Stitch is an example of what Disney actually does best,” says David Greenbaum, President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios. First introduced in 2002, Stitch quickly became a cross-generational phenomenon. His popularity has surged through sequels, TV shows, and character appearances at Disney Parks. The Stitch brand has expanded 27-fold over the last five years.

Beyond animation, Stitch is now a staple across Walt Disney World Resort and Aulani. Guests can enjoy meet-and-greet experiences and find Stitch merchandise worldwide. He’s even celebrated each year on June 26, or “626 Day,” a playful nod to his experiment number.

Now, Stitch returns to the big screen, reimagined for a new generation through Live-Action Lilo & Stitch.

Creating a New Lilo & Stitch Experience

Reimagining Stitch for live action required thoughtful decisions. “The team did such an amazing job figuring out how to bring Stitch from the animated world into our own,” Greenbaum said. The cast includes Maia Kealoha as Lilo and Sydney Agudong as Nani. Chris Sanders, the original voice of Stitch and co-director of the 2002 film, returns for this new take.

To build anticipation, Stitch has appeared across high-profile events — from the Super Bowl to Disney’s Upfronts. The trailer reached 170 million views within 24 hours after airing during the big game.

Why Stitch Still Matters

“Stitch is mischievous, but also cuddly,” Greenbaum explains. That unique blend of chaos and charm continues to resonate with fans. Those who grew up with Lilo & Stitch now share it with their kids, passing on the film’s timeless message of ohana.

Greenbaum highlights the film’s emotional core. “Our movies have heart and humor,” he says, “and I think Lilo & Stitch does exactly that.”

Live-Action Lilo & Stitch is ready to bring families together once again — with laughter, warmth, and just a little mischief.
