Big changes are coming to Disney California Adventure, and they start with a heartfelt farewell to one of Pixar’s original attractions. The classic ride Monsters, Inc.: Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! It will officially close in early 2026 to make way for a brand-new Avatar destination as part of a major Disneyland Resort expansion.
Disneyland Expansion Plans Revealed

Disney recently unveiled new plans for infrastructure upgrades and resort expansion. Among the biggest announcements: an all-new parking structure and transportation hub, complete with 6,000 new parking spaces and a pedestrian bridge that will enhance guest access from Harbor Boulevard. This upgraded east-side entry is just the beginning.
The project paves the way for several new additions, including two Avengers Campus attractions, a Coco-themed ride near Paradise Gardens Park, and a much-anticipated Avatar experience.
Avatar Experience Takes Over Hollywood Backlot
The future Avatar destination will occupy a portion of the current Hollywood Backlot area. While the project remains in early development, the decision has been made to close Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! to clear space for this immersive new experience.

This Monsters, Inc. dark ride has been a staple of the park since 2006 and holds sentimental value for many fans. As one of the few remaining attractions in the Hollywood Land section, its closure marks the end of an era—and the beginning of a bold new one.
What’s Next for Disney California Adventure?
In addition to the Avatar expansion, Disney will begin construction on the Coco attraction backstage this fall. While details remain limited, the ride will celebrate the music and heart of Pixar’s Academy Award-winning film.

The combination of Avengers Campus, Avatar, and Coco will redefine Disney California Adventure, enhancing both capacity and storytelling across the park.

If Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! Holds a special place in your heart, now is the time to plan that final ride—before it disappears into the Disney vault of history. If you’re a Monsters, Inc. fan, don’t worry—Mike and Sulley will still be around! With a full Monsters, Inc.-themed land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World, you’ll have plenty of chances to meet them there and ride the new coaster.
