A Magical Milestone: 55 Years of the Walt Disney Archives
On June 22, 2025, the Walt Disney Archives marked its 55th anniversary in classic Disney fashion—with storytelling at its heart. The department, originally founded by Disney Legend Dave Smith in 1970, has grown from a team of one into a group of over 40 dedicated archivists. Their shared mission? To protect, preserve, and share the legacy of The Walt Disney Company.

To commemorate this historic moment, the team produced a brand-new short film, A Daring Journey into the Walt Disney Archives, which brings the archive’s mission to life through the eyes of a very special Disney artifact.
Pinocchio Takes the Lead in a New Short Film
The short film is told from a surprising and magical viewpoint—that of a Pinocchio animator’s model used during production of the 1940 classic. The film follows the model’s journey from rediscovery to display, highlighting the precision and care that goes into the archival process.
Viewers get a behind-the-scenes look at how Disney preserves its legacy. From condition reporting and cataloging to advanced 3D scanning in the Digital Preservation Lab. Then, in a whimsical twist, the Pinocchio model escapes and scurries through the Archives. Offering a playful tour filled with Easter eggs and surprises.
Hidden Gems from the Archives
As Pinocchio dashes through the Archives, fans will spot familiar treasures. Highlights include Mary Poppins’ “Jolly Holiday” costume worn by Julie Andrews, the Ark of the Covenant from The Great Movie Ride, and a dress worn by Kate Winslet in Titanic. There’s also the large Pinocchio puppet from Fantasmic! and the cage from the 2022 live-action Pinocchio, adding a deeply personal connection across decades of Disney history.

“We wanted to use this opportunity to showcase the breadth of our collection,” said Joanna Pratt, Director of Operations & Business Strategy. “And of course, a few of our crown jewels.”
The Team Preserving the Magic
The film also shines a spotlight on the people behind the scenes. Nearly all current Archives staff make appearances, honoring the growing team that keeps Disney’s history alive. The film even features a special cameo from founder Dave Smith, who pioneered the first entertainment archive in Hollywood.

In a touching final scene, filmmaker Theodore “Ted” Thomas—son of Disney Legend Frank Thomas—admires the animator’s model now on display at Disney California Adventure Park. It’s likely the same model his father worked with over 80 years ago.
Looking Ahead While Honoring the Past
“The new stories we tell today at Disney will become tomorrow’s history,” said Archives Director Rebecca Cline. The Archives doesn’t just store history—it helps share it. Through exhibits, special programs, and now creative films, the team connects past and present for Disney fans worldwide.
For 55 years, the Walt Disney Archives has served as the company’s memory bank. Thanks to projects like A Daring Journey, it continues to protect Walt’s legacy and inspire generations to come.
