The Fantastic Four: First Steps – Marvel’s First Family Reimagined

Marvel Studios is reshaping the legacy of its First Family with Fantastic Four: First Steps, set in an alternate timeline and drenched in vibrant retro-futurism. Opening in theaters July 25, 2025, this isn’t an origin story—it picks up four years after Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm gained their powers from cosmic rays.

In this reimagined universe of Earth-828, the Fantastic Four are more than heroes. They’re celebrities, scientists, and leaders who balance fame with family bonds. But when Galactus (Ralph Ineson) threatens Earth and targets their son Franklin, the family dynamic becomes their greatest strength—and their greatest vulnerability.

A Family Beyond Superpowers

Joseph Quinn, who plays Johnny Storm, described the team’s emotional core: “They suffer the consequences and responsibility of their powers every single day. When you know someone understands how you feel, you do anything for them.” That bond becomes critical when Franklin is in danger.

Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm) emphasized the personal stakes. “There’s a global threat, sure, but what matters most is protecting the future—their child. That sense of urgency drives the whole film.”

Nostalgia Meets Innovation

While the threat of Galactus looms, the film is grounded in visual optimism. Production designer Kasra Farahani leaned into mid-century modern aesthetics, drawing inspiration from Jack Kirby’s comic artistry and the sci-fi flair of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Left to Right: Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps. They are all wearing blue and white Super Hero suits while standing on a stage in front of a large blue and white “4” sign.

Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards) praised the visual storytelling: “The world feels like a nostalgic fantasy of what the future could be. Flying cars, bold colors—it’s a disarming charm that helps you understand the characters.”

Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm) echoed that sentiment. “Matt Shakman created a world you could smell. It was so specific and detailed that stepping into it immediately grounded us.”

Casting with Heart

The cast poured themselves into the experience, both emotionally and artistically. “We asked ourselves to put our whole hearts into this—on camera and off,” Pascal explained. “That energy and closeness shaped the film. We hope audiences can feel it.”
