Disney Back to School Movies and Shows on Disney+

Back to School with Disney+

The end of summer doesn’t mean the end of fun. With a new school year ahead, Disney+ offers a range of shows and movies that evoke school spirit, classroom drama, and even a touch of nostalgia. Inspired by D23’s list of must-watch titles, we’ve put together our own lineup—with a few additions that Disney’s official list missed. And speaking of missed opportunities—how could D23 leave out one of the all-time classics? High School Musical (along with High School Musical 2 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year) practically defined a generation’s view of high school and remains a back-to-school essential.

High School Adventures

High School Musical (2006), High School Musical 2 (2007), and High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008)
We’re all in this together! These films captured the heart of a generation with unforgettable songs, themes of belonging, and plenty of school spirit. From basketball games to summer jobs and senior year goodbyes, the trilogy remains the ultimate back-to-school watch party.

The Princess Diaries (2001)
What’s harder than high school? Finding out you’re a princess on top of it. Anne Hathaway’s breakout role as Mia Thermopolis is still a fan favorite, balancing royal duties with algebra homework.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (2019–2023)
Drama, music, crushes, and identity—East High has it all. Whether you watch the mockumentary-style series or revisit the original film trilogy, Wildcats everywhere will agree: school spirit lives on.

Sky High (2005)
It’s tough enough starting high school. Imagine starting at a school for superheroes before your powers kick in. A cult favorite, Sky High blends comic book action with the awkwardness of freshman year.

Animated Classics for School Days

The Simpsons Back-to-School Stream
Springfield-style school days are in session! Disney+ is running a special stream of more than 100 school-themed episodes of The Simpsons. From Bart’s detention antics to Lisa’s endless pursuit of straight A’s, this marathon is perfect for late-night laughs before heading back to the classroom.

Recess (1997–1999)
Every kid’s favorite “subject.” T.J., Spinelli, Vince, Gretchen, Mikey, and Gus navigate the playground politics of Third Street Elementary, proving that recess is just as important as math and science. This ’90s gem still resonates with anyone who ever counted down the minutes to lunchtime.

Schoolhouse Rock! (1973–1994)
Multiplication, grammar, and history lessons have never been catchier. With songs like Conjunction Junction and I’m Just a Bill, these shorts mix nostalgia with learning. Disney+ also has the Schoolhouse Rock! 50th Anniversary Singalong, featuring Disney stars and even The Muppets.

College Prep

Monsters University (2013)
Mike and Sully weren’t always best friends. Their college years show the challenges of roommates, study sessions, and big campus rivalries. Perfect for anyone about to step onto a college campus for the first time.

Toy Story 3 (2010)
Andy heading to college means it’s time to say goodbye. For students (or parents) preparing for the big move, this Pixar classic is as emotional as it gets. Tissues required.

Coming of Age

Boy Meets World (1993–1999) and Girl Meets World (2014–2016)
Few shows capture the ups and downs of growing up like Cory Matthews and his wise teacher, Mr. Feeny. Girl Meets World continues the story with the next generation, reminding us that school lessons extend far beyond the classroom.

Inside Out (2015)
First days at a new school are emotional. Riley’s inner world—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger—helps kids (and parents) navigate the challenges of growing up and making big transitions.

Teen Beach Movie (2013)
One last summer hurrah before heading back to the books. This surf-inspired Disney Channel Original Movie keeps the spirit of vacation alive, even after the school bell rings.

What D23 Missed

While D23 highlighted some great picks, a few school-themed gems deserve a spot on your watchlist:

  • Lizzie McGuire (2001–2004): Middle school life, awkward moments, and animated commentary from Lizzie’s inner thoughts. A back-to-school essential for anyone who remembers the early 2000s.
  • Turning Red (2022): Mei Lee’s struggles with middle school, friendships, and transformations (literally) make this Pixar film a modern must-watch for students juggling changes in their own lives.
  • The Proud Family (2001–2005): From classroom rivalries to spelling bees, Penny Proud and her friends tackle middle school life with humor and heart.
  • Doug (Disney’s Doug, 1996–1999): School dances, homework, and first crushes—Doug Funnie captured it all. While the character started at Nickelodeon, Disney’s version (and Doug’s 1st Movie) makes him part of the Disney family.
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017): Marvel Studios’ first solo Spider-Man film captures Peter Parker balancing high school homework with superhero responsibilities.
  • X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997): Following young mutants at Xavier’s School, this Marvel classic is equal parts classroom drama and epic battles.
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2021) & Rodrick Rules (2022): These 20th Century Studios films bring Jeff Kinney’s beloved books to life, following Greg Heffley’s middle school misadventures.

Final Bell

Whether you’re reliving your school days or preparing for a brand-new semester, Disney+ has no shortage of movies and shows to get you in the back-to-school spirit. From royal diaries to playground adventures, these stories remind us that lessons don’t always come from textbooks.
