At Destination D23 2025, one of the sessions I was most excited for was “The Disney Family Legacy with Roy P. Disney.” The panel offered a rare glimpse into the Disney family’s history through the eyes of Walt Disney’s great-nephew, Roy P. Disney. Moderated by Becky Cline, Director of the Walt Disney Archives, the panel blended personal stories, family photos, and unique memories that connected audiences directly to the roots of the Disney legacy.
Stories from the Family Tree
To clarify the family lineage, Roy P. Disney is the grandson of Roy O. Disney, Walt Disney’s older brother and business partner. Roy P.’s father was Roy E. Disney, the longtime Disney executive and son of Roy O. Disney. That makes Roy P. Disney the great-nephew of Walt Disney.
Roy P. Disney spoke candidly about his childhood and the values passed down from his grandfather, Roy O. Disney, and great-uncle Walt Disney. With Becky Cline guiding the conversation, archival images and treasured photographs added depth, bringing the narrative to life.
Memories of Walt and Roy O. Disney
Roy P. Disney recalled warm family gatherings and moments that showed Walt and Roy O. beyond their public personas. The discussion reminded attendees that the Disney story is not only about theme parks and films, but also about the family ties that inspired them.
Additional Highlights from the PanelBecky Cline opened the discussion by welcoming Roy P. Disney to the stage and setting the tone for an intimate conversation.
Roy P. highlighted a story from 1946, when Roy O. Disney flew to London to meet author P. L. Travers and begin negotiations for Mary Poppins. That agreement took years to complete. He also described attending the opening of Walt Disney World, recalling his grandfather’s dedication speech and the unforgettable sight of a 1,076-piece marching band. The band stretched from Main Street, U.S.A. to Cinderella Castle, with musicians still arriving under the train station during the performance.
Becky Cline connected the conversation back to the present by noting how a Disney family sailboat inspired the nautical theming of the Yacht Club Resort at Walt Disney World, and even appeared in the theming.
Connecting the Past and Present
The presentation bridged history with the modern Disney legacy. Guests were reminded that the company’s enduring creativity and innovation remain deeply rooted in family values. The session was short but powerful, leaving fans with a greater appreciation for the foundation on which the Disney company was built.
