New Nat Geo Documentary Makes Pivotal Discovery: Submerged Ancient Port Could Be Key to Cleopatra’s Tomb

A Landmark Discovery

The search for Cleopatra’s tomb has long fascinated archaeologists.  National Geographic Explorer Kathleen Martinez has uncovered what may be the most pivotal discovery yet: a submerged ancient port near the ruins of Taposiris Magna off the coast of Egypt. Moreover, she is joined by Bob Ballard, famed discoverer of the Titanic, and together they lead a team of underwater archaeologists. The findings strongly suggest Cleopatra’s final resting place could lie hidden beneath the waves.

Uncovering the Submerged Port

During the expedition, the team discovered colossal structures arranged in rows over 20 feet high. They also discovered polished stone floors, columns, amphorae, and anchors dating back to the time of Cleopatra. As a result, the discoveries reinforce Martinez’s theory that Cleopatra’s body may have been carried through the 4,265-foot underground tunnel she discovered in 2022. From there, it could have been transported offshore to this once-bustling port. Later, earthquakes and a tsunami in A.D. 365 submerged much of Alexandria—and possibly the Queen’s tomb along with it.

Kathleen Martinez’s Lifelong Quest

Martinez has pursued this mystery for more than 20 years. Each artifact strengthens her resolve. “I’m not going to stop,” she says. “For me, it’s a matter of time.” Her determination fuels Cleopatra’s Final Secret, bringing viewers along as archeology and history combine to unravel one of the world’s greatest unsolved mysteries.
