For over four decades, the sounds of trumpets, violins, and guitars have echoed through EPCOT’s Mexico pavilion, courtesy of the world-famous Mariachi Cobre. This month, Disney recognized one of its founding members, Esteban Carrillo, with the Walt Disney Legacy Award—the highest honor a cast member can receive.

A Legacy That Began Before EPCOT
Mariachi Cobre’s story began long before EPCOT opened its gates in 1982. Founded in 1971 by Randy Carrillo in Tucson, Arizona, the group aimed to introduce authentic mariachi music to audiences worldwide. Joined by his brother Esteban Carilllo, Mack Ruiz, and arranger Frank Grijalva, they introduced traditional Mexican music to Disney guests when EPCOT opened on October 1, 1982. More than 43 years later, Mariachi Cobre remains one of the park’s longest-running acts—performing daily in the Mexico pavilion and continuing a musical tradition that predates the park itself.
The Heart of the World Showcase
Since EPCOT’s opening day, Mariachi Cobre has been an essential part of the park’s cultural identity. Alongside the Voices of Liberty in the American Adventure pavilion, they stand as two of the last original live entertainment acts from EPCOT’s debut year. Their performances blend energy, authenticity, and warmth, inviting guests to stop and share in the rhythms and stories of Jalisco, Mexico.

Performing With Legends
Throughout their career, Mariachi Cobre have collaborated with some of the most respected names in music, including Linda Ronstadt, Julio Iglesias, Vicki Carr, and Lola Beltran. Their albums, from Mariachi Cobre to XXV Anniversary, showcase their unmatched talent and commitment to preserving the heritage of mariachi.
A New Generation and “The Story of Coco”
In 2019, Mariachi Cobre introduced a new chapter to their story with The Story of Coco, a live musical celebration inspired by Disney-Pixar’s Coco. The show combines music, narrative, and culture, resonating deeply with audiences and solidifying their legacy at EPCOT. It’s a performance that connects the traditions of old Mexico to Disney’s storytelling magic—an experience both timeless and deeply personal.

Esteban Carrillo: Dream, Create, Inspire
This year, co-founder Esteban Carrillo joins a select group of Disney cast members who’ve received the Walt Disney Legacy Award. Recognizing those who embody Walt’s timeless values—Dream, Create, and Inspire. Esteban’s Disney journey began even earlier than EPCOT. He first performed at Disneyland in 1968 as part of a youth mariachi group, where he once flew on Walt Disney’s personal plane—a moment he still describes as a dream come true.
Known for his ever-present smile and uplifting spirit, Esteban’s peers say, “If anyone doesn’t have one, Esteban will make sure they do by the end of the day.” His joy has touched millions of guests and countless fellow cast members over more than 50 years of performances.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Among those inspired by Esteban is fellow Mariachi Cobre member Rene Aguirre Garcia, also from Tucson. Rene recalls growing up with posters of Esteban and Randy Carrillo on his wall. Dreaming one day of performing with them. “He was definitely one of my idols,” Rene says. “Now, playing alongside him is a dream come true.”
Through teaching, mentoring, and performing, Esteban has helped shape the next generation of mariachi musicians, extending his influence far beyond EPCOT. In 2022, his contributions were further honored when he became one of the faces of the U.S. Postal Service’s Mariachi Forever stamp series, celebrating mariachi music’s cultural significance worldwide.

A Forever Legacy
Esteban’s humility and gratitude continue to define his career. Upon receiving the Legacy Award, he credited his success to the entire Mariachi Cobre ensemble. “Without them, I wouldn’t be the musician or person I am today.” Now wearing his new blue Legacy nametag. Esteban stands as a symbol of everything Disney values—creativity, authenticity, and the power of music to unite people.
From the streets of Tucson to the world stage of EPCOT. Esteban Carrillo’s journey is a living example of Walt’s vision to “keep moving forward.” His music continues to inspire, connect, and celebrate the beauty of Mexican culture—one song at a time.
Congratulations to Esteban Carrillo and Mariachi Cobre—true Disney Legends in every sense.
