National Geographic Best of the World 2026: 25 Must-Visit Destinations

National Geographic has revealed its annual Best of the World 2026 list—25 awe-inspiring destinations that celebrate meaningful, sustainable, and immersive travel experiences for the year ahead. The global list includes places as diverse as Rwanda’s Akagera National Park, Uzbekistan’s Khiva, Japan’s Mount Zao, and Dominica’s first sperm whale reserve. But what truly caught my attention was seeing Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, included among this year’s standouts.  Maybe the Muppets were right, they should move Muppet Vision 3D to Pittsburgh!

National Geographic’s annual Best of the World compilation, curated by editors, contributors, and explorers, is designed to inspire travelers to connect more deeply with the world. This year’s edition spans every continent—from the Dolomites of Italy to the beaches of Fiji—highlighting destinations that combine culture, adventure, and conservation.

The 2026 Best of the World by Continent

National Geographic’s list flows like a journey across the globe, showcasing the spirit and wonder of travel through each region.

Across Africa, travelers can embark on a safari through Akagera National Park in Rwanda.  A conservation triumph where wildlife thrives once again.

In Asia, stories of heritage and innovation intertwine—from the ancient streets of Khiva, Uzbekistan, to the bustling flavors of Manila, the new Dongseo Trail in South Korea, the icy artistry of Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, and the timeless grandeur of Beijing, China.

Journeying through South America, travelers will find art, rhythm, and resilience in Rio de Janeiro, Medellín, and Dominica, each offering a dynamic sense of renewal and connection.

Bridging continents, the Middle East welcomes explorers to Rabat, Morocco.  Where Moorish gardens meet Atlantic breezes, and the Black Sea Coast of Türkiye, where culture and coastline converge.

And finally—Sorry, Antarctica… maybe next year.

Let’s Take a Closer Look at North America

This year’s North American highlights reflect a stunning variety of experiences — from road trips and coastal escapes to cultural renewal. Among the six featured destinations, one stands out to me.  It’s my hometown: Pittsburgh, a city that has transformed from a steel powerhouse to a creative capital, proudly joining the ranks of the world’s must-visit places.

Downtown Pittsburgh has transformed from its industrial past and ushered in a new era of cultural attractions, such as the newly expanded Andy Warhol Museum, which visitors can easily access from one of the Three Sisters Bridges, including the Roberto Clemente Bridge near the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball stadium. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh has reinvented itself from an industrial powerhouse into a vibrant cultural hub. Visitors can explore 24 miles of riverfront trails, ride the historic Duquesne Incline for panoramic views, and experience neighborhoods brimming with energy.  From the food markets of the Strip District to the art scene in Lawrenceville. The Andy Warhol Museum anchors a city now defined by creativity and innovation. As Pittsburgh prepares to host the 2026 NFL Draft, its downtown core is transforming once again.  Adding new hotels, public spaces, and fan experiences that showcase the city’s growth and spirit. The event will spotlight how far Pittsburgh has come—from its steel roots to a modern destination ready for the national stage. At the confluence of three rivers, Point State Park offers one of the most iconic views in America. With 90 unique neighborhoods, the city delivers both character and accessibility.

Maui, Hawaii

Maui combines dramatic natural scenery with accessible adventure. One of the island’s most unforgettable experiences is driving the Hana Highway, a coastal route lined with waterfalls, tropical rainforest, and cliffside views. Along the way, Waiʻānapanapa State Park features a black sand beach, lava caverns, and ancient Hawaiian trails. Park access is timed to ensure sustainable tourism and preserve this sacred landscape.

Route 66, Oklahoma

The iconic Route 66 continues to represent the golden age of American road trips. In Oklahoma, this legendary stretch of highway is dotted with retro diners, neon-lit motels, and living Americana. Highlights include Tulsa’s Desert Hills Motel, restored to 1950s charm, and art installations that pay homage to the Mother Road. The route blends nostalgia with modern creativity, capturing the enduring romance of open-road travel.
