The 99th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade delivered one of its most memorable mornings in years, thanks in large part to the many Disney stories floating above Manhattan. From decades-old balloon traditions to a brand-new Disney Cruise Line showcase, Disney’s presence helped turn the holiday into a celebration of past, present, and future.
Minnie Mouse: A New Parade Icon in the Making
Minnie made her giant balloon debut in 2024, marking her first solo appearance in the long-running Macy’s tradition. Designed by Disney character artist Jeff Shelly, the balloon features Minnie in her signature polka-dot dress, classic red bow, and yellow heels. The proportions echo her animated style, making her instantly recognizable at a distance.
Her 2025 return uses the same balloon design, continuing what is quickly becoming a new Thanksgiving morning tradition. Even in just two appearances, Minnie has carved out a highly anticipated moment on the parade route. Her balloon also ties into Macy’s limited-edition Minnie merchandise, making her appearance a highlight for families and collectors.
Buzz Lightyear: To Infinity, Beyond, and Back Again
Buzz Lightyear’s balloon history stretches far beyond this year’s parade. He debuted as a giant balloon in 2008. Instantly becoming a crowd favorite thanks to his wings-out, “Space Ranger on duty” pose. That first-generation balloon appeared annually through 2013, giving Buzz a solid six-year run.
After a long hiatus — broken only by a special appearance at D23 Expo 2015, where fans like me got to see Buzz up close — the Space Ranger returned for 2025 in a brand-new second-generation balloon. This updated version stays true to the original pose, giving fans the visual nostalgia they love with modern balloon engineering.
Spider-Man: A Parade Legend Returns
Spider-Man is one of the longest-running balloons in Macy’s parade history. His first balloon debuted in 1987, bringing Marvel into the parade for the first time. Spidey stood out immediately. Instead of floating stiffly, his signature forward-leaning pose created a sense of motion. It looked as if he were swinging down Sixth Avenue.
The current balloon, flying again in 2025, reflects modern Marvel animation. It keeps the classic pose with crisper colors and a more heroic silhouette. It remains one of the most iconic visuals of the entire parade.
Bluey: A Modern Favorite
While the show originates from Australia’s Ludo Studio, Bluey has become a core part of the Disney family through distribution on Disney Junior and Disney+.
The giant balloon debuted in 2022, and with a Bluey movie coming in 2027, her presence is only growing. Bluey remains one of the most beloved modern characters in the parade — and one that Disney fans of all ages wait to see.
Preview of the Disney Destiny
The Parade performance teases what guests will find aboard the new ship, including a Cruella de Vil lounge, Dr. Facilier encounters, and a “Disney Hercules” Broadway-style show. Other highlights include an Incredibles-themed sweet shop and Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King, where dinner becomes a live musical celebration.
