Disney and ESPN announced that ESPN on Disney+ launched today across 53 countries and territories in Europe and select Asia-Pacific markets. With that move, ESPN now reaches fans through Disney+ in about 100 markets around the world.
For Disney fans, that is another clear sign that Disney+ is expanding beyond its traditional entertainment roots.
What Launched Today
The launch brings ESPN content to Disney+ subscribers across Europe, while select Asia-Pacific markets including Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong get an initial curated lineup of English-language ESPN programming. In both regions, subscribers can access live sporting events, studio shows, films, and original content inside the same Disney+ app they already use for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and general entertainment.
What Fans Can Watch
The exact lineup will vary by market, but Disney says the offering will grow to thousands of live events over the next year. That includes U.S. sports coverage of the NBA and NHL starting with the 2026-27 season.
The lineup also includes college sports such as NCAA championships, men’s and women’s March Madness, college basketball regular season games, conference tournaments, college football, the College Football Playoff, and bowl games. Disney also highlighted the Little League World Series, Savannah Bananas, and more.
More Than Live Games
This rollout is not just about live events. Disney+ subscribers in these markets also get access to ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary collection, along with a wider library of acclaimed sports films and select studio programming.
That includes ESPN FC, which adds another strong draw for soccer fans.
How This Fits Into Disney’s Bigger Strategy
Disney has already been adding sports to Disney+ in different regions, and this latest move builds on that strategy. In Europe, Disney+ already carries sports rights that include the UEFA Women’s Champions League, LALIGA in the UK and Ireland, and in the Nordics, events such as the Copa del Rey, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League, and DFB Pokal.
In select APAC markets, the offering will also include KeSPA events like Esports Championships Asia Jinju 2026 and the 2026 LoL KeSPA Cup.
Why This Matters for Disney+
For years, Disney+ was defined mostly by its franchises and family appeal. That has not changed, but the platform is clearly evolving. Live sports gives Disney another reason to keep subscribers engaged, especially in markets where rights packages and event programming can help Disney+ stand out.
It also connects Disney+ more directly to one of Disney’s strongest media brands. ESPN has long been one of the company’s most powerful names, and putting more of it inside Disney+ makes that relationship far more visible.
Sam’s Disney Diary Take
This launch says a lot about where Disney+ is heading.
Disney is not just adding more programming. It is making Disney+ a more complete streaming hub, one that can serve families, franchise fans, and sports viewers inside the same app.
For Disney fans, that is a notable shift. For sports fans, the appeal is simple: more live events, more ESPN programming, and fewer reasons to leave Disney+.
