With the moat around Cinderella Castle drained for castle painting, Magic Kingdom guests are seeing a rare piece of hidden park history. The tracks visible in the moat are tied to the old Plaza Swan Boats. This scenic attraction once carried guests around the hub and into Adventureland.
That is why so many guests are asking about them now. What looks like random hardware is actually part of a long-lost Magic Kingdom ride.
What Were the Plaza Swan Boats?
The Plaza Swan Boats operated at Magic Kingdom during the 1970s and into the early 1980s before closing in August 1983. A 1974 Magic Kingdom park map helps show how the attraction worked, including the load and unload station and illustrations of the boats along the route.
Using that map, it is easier to see that this was not a ride with multiple stops. Guests boarded near the hub by Tomorrowland, then cruised through the waterways around the hub where they passed views toward Main Street landmarks like the Penny Arcade, Casey’s Corner, and The Plaza Restaurant before continuing toward Adventureland, moving beneath the Cinderella Castle drawbridge area, and returning to the unloading station. It was a quiet sightseeing ride, not a thrill attraction, and it reflected an earlier version of Magic Kingdom where scenic experiences were part of the park’s charm.
What Guests Are Seeing in the Moat
The exposed tracks, seen during the 2026 Cinderella Castle Painting project are remnants of the Plaza Swan Boats route. That is the real reason they have caught so much attention during the castle repainting project. Most guests had no idea a ride once moved through this waterway. So seeing the track elements suddenly visible in the drained and cleaned moat feels like a hidden part of Magic Kingdom history resurfacing.
The Swan Boats originally used an electronic guidance system that did not work as planned. After a brief refurbishment, the boats were retrofitted with water-jet propulsion and manual steering. That helps explain why fans connect the visible tracks to the ride’s operational history.
The Dock Lasted a Lot Longer Than the Ride
The Swan Boat loading platform remained visible for decades after the attraction closed. It eventually disappeared during the Magic Kingdom Hub expansion in 2014. Over the years, the old dock area was repurposed at times for small displays, photo spots, and at least some character-related uses. This explain why some longtime park fans remembered the structure long after the boats were gone.
Why the Ride Closed
The Swan Boats closed in August 1983 after years of “Seasonal” operation. The ride was expensive to operate, had ongoing navigation and maintenance issues, and offered limited capacity. In a growing Magic Kingdom, that made it harder to justify keeping the attraction running.
Sam’s Disney Diary Take
This is a great example of how current work at Magic Kingdom can uncover old stories hiding in plain sight. The drained moat is not just revealing construction access. It is revealing a forgotten attraction that once circled the heart of the park.
So when guests ask what those tracks are, the answer is simple: they are remnants of the Plaza Swan Boats, one of Magic Kingdom’s most overlooked pieces of history.
