Sofia the First: Royal Magic Sets Disney Jr. and Disney+ Premiere Date

Sofia is getting a brand-new chapter.  Disney has announced that Sofia the First: Royal Magic will premiere Monday, May 25, 2026, on Disney Jr. and Disney Jr. on Demand at 7:00 a.m. EDT/PDT. Then, the first eight episodes arrive the next day, Tuesday, May 26, on Disney+ in the U.S. and select international markets. Disney says the series will continue rolling out globally throughout 2026.

For Disney fans, this feels like more than a simple revival. Sofia the First was one of the most successful Disney Jr. franchises of its era, and now Disney is giving Sofia a new setting, a new magical challenge, and a fresh entry point for a new generation of families.

A New Magical Adventure for Sofia

This time, Sofia heads to The Charmswell School for Royal Magic. There, she discovers she may be the most magical princess in the realm. That new setup moves the story beyond royal lessons and into a larger magical world, while still keeping Sofia at the center.

Sofia returns in Sofia the First: Royal Magic, premiering May 25 on Disney Jr. and May 26 on Disney+.

That school setting could be a smart move for Disney Jr. It opens the door to new friends, new powers, and a bigger sense of adventure. At the same time, it still holds onto the heart that made the original series work so well.

Familiar Voices and New Faces

Ariel Winter returns as Sofia, which gives the series an immediate connection to the original. The regular cast also includes Nate Torrence as Pepper, Mela Pietropaolo as Layla, Kai Harris as Zane, and Aaliyah Magcasi as Camila.

Disney also confirmed a strong recurring and guest lineup. Beanie Feldstein, Yvette Nicole Brown, James Monroe Iglehart, Jeremy Swift, and Tony Hale join the series. Returning favorites include Wayne Brady as Clover, Tim Gunn as Baileywick, Eric Stonestreet as Minimus, Sara Ramirez as Queen Miranda, Travis Willingham as King Roland, Darcy Rose Byrnes as Amber, and Jess Harnell as Cedric.

That mix should help Sofia the First: Royal Magic feel both new and familiar, which is exactly what a follow-up series needs.

Moana and Other Disney Princesses Join the Story

One of the biggest reveals is that Moana, Rapunzel, Jasmine, Cinderella, Aurora, and Elena of Avalor will all make special appearances across the series. Disney says they will offer guidance, wisdom, and support when Sofia needs it most.

The standout detail here is Moana. This marks the first time Moana will interact with Sofia, and Auli‘i Cravalho is returning to voice her. That is a fun crossover moment for Disney fans, especially because the original Sofia the First became known for weaving Disney Princess appearances into Sofia’s story in a way that felt meaningful rather than random.

The Theme Song Returns

Disney also unveiled a new version of the iconic Sofia the First theme song along with the series key art. According to Disney, the original theme has reached 130 million audio and video streams globally, plus more than 801 million UGC streams. The new theme song released April 3, and the full soundtrack is set for May 29 through Walt Disney Records.  That matters because the original theme was a big part of the show’s identity. Bringing it back in an updated form is a smart way to connect longtime fans with the new series.

Why Sofia Still Matters

The original Sofia the First premiered in 2012 and quickly became one of Disney’s biggest preschool hits. Disney says it still holds the record for the top three cable TV telecasts for girls ages 2 to 5 and remains one of the company’s biggest preschool franchises. Disney also reports more than $1 billion in retail sales and over 3 billion hours watched since the franchise began.

That kind of staying power helps explain why Disney is revisiting the character now. Sofia is not just a nostalgic title for parents who watched with their kids years ago. She is also still a recognizable Disney Jr. brand with room to grow across streaming, merchandise, publishing, and parks.

Sofia’s Return Goes Beyond the Series

Disney is already building that bigger push. The company says Sofia will be part of Walt Disney World’s Cool KIDS’ SUMMER this year. She is also tied to the returning Disney Jr. Let’s Play! Party at Disneyland Resort this August, including a one-day family-focused event at Disney California Adventure. A new toy and role-play line from Just Play is also set to launch later this summer, with Walmart serving as the exclusive U.S. retailer.

That wider rollout makes this feel less like a one-off series launch and more like a full Sofia return across Disney platforms.

Sam’s Disney Diary Take

Sofia the First: Royal Magic looks like a smart next step for a Disney Jr. favorite. The new school setting gives the series room to expand, while Ariel Winter’s return and the lineup of visiting princesses keep it connected to what fans already loved.

The Moana crossover is the headline grabber, but the bigger story may be Disney leaning back into one of its most proven preschool brands. Between the Disney Jr. premiere, the next-day Disney+ drop, the soundtrack, the park tie-ins, and the toy rollout, this already looks like a major push for Sofia in 2026.

Families who grew up with the original will probably want to see how this next chapter unfolds. For younger viewers meeting Sofia for the first time, Disney seems to be making it easy to jump right in.
