Top High School Musical Season 4 Easter Eggs and Callbacks You Might’ve Missed

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has always been meta—but the final season might be the most meta of them all! With the entire series now streaming exclusively on Disney+, we’ve rounded up five of our top Easter eggs and callbacks throughout Season 4.

In a scene from the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series episode “High School Musical 4,” Taylor McKessie, played by Monique Coleman, and Ms. Darbus, played by Alyson Reed, stand onstage opposite Gina Porter, played by Sofia Wylie, and Mack Alana, played by Matthew Sato, who are both dancing. The stage is bathed in purple light.

1. A Familiar Tune – Classic Song References

Season 4 kicks off with High School Musical 4, where original cast members Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, and more reprise their roles. Chad’s line, “This is all about me?” is a direct callback to Ms. Darbus’ line in High School Musical 3: Senior Year. And from there, the musical references only multiply. Ricky references “Now or Never,” Kourtney celebrates Sharpay’s “Fabulous,” and Gina and Mack channel “Bet on It” during their number “High School Reunion.”

In a scene from the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series episode “HSM v. HSM,” Kourtney Greene, played by Dara Reneé, smiles and holds a bedazzled pink phone.

2. The Ultimate Callback – Fantasy Flashbacks

When Ricky and Gina co-write “Maybe This Time,” the show flashes back to their emotional moments from Seasons 1 and 2—including the “Homecoming” episode and that pivotal Valentine’s Day scene. These newly filmed memories add depth to their budding relationship and highlight just how far they’ve come.

3. Dressing the Part – Halloweentime Hints

In “Trick or Treat,” Ricky doesn’t dress up as Troy—he goes full Zac Efron from Baywatch, complete with cooking oil for extra shine. Meanwhile, Dani rocks Gabriella’s graduation look from High School Musical 3. These subtle costumes serve as loving nods to the franchise’s past.

In a scene from the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series episode “Trick or Treat,” various characters are wearing Halloween costumes and are gathered in a circle.

4. Chocolate, Finally – A Valentine’s Payoff

Remember when Gina thought Ricky gave her chocolates in Season 2, but it was actually from her mom? In Season 4’s “Admissions,” Ricky shows up in the rain with a box of chocolates—finally fulfilling that sweet setup from two seasons ago.

In a scene from the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series episode “Valentine’s Day,” Ricky Bowen, played by Joshua Bassett, plays guitar amid a sea of boxes.

5. Full Circle – Miss Jenn’s Journey

In “Trust the Process,” a flashback shows Miss Jenn receiving advice from Alyson Reed.  Who played Ms. Darbus in the original films—during an audition for Wicked. That moment inspires Jenn to become a teacher at East High.  Tying the entire High School Musical saga back to where it all began.
