A New Adventure Begins: Reimagined Adventureland Treehouse Opens at Disneyland

On November 10, 2023, Disneyland Park unveiled a stunning reimagining of the Adventureland Treehouse, a tribute to Walt Disney’s original 1962 Swiss Family Treehouse attraction. While honoring the past, this refreshed experience introduces a new family and storyline tailored for a new generation of explorers

An image of the Adventureland Treehouse looking from the ground up to its peak features the working waterwheel in the foreground and the stairways behind and above it, snaking around the trunk of the banyan tree.

A Homage to the Past with a Fresh Perspective

The updated Adventureland Treehouse preserves the spirit of Walt Disney’s original vision: a family using creativity and ingenuity to transform a massive banyan tree into a self-sustaining jungle home. Kim Irvine, Executive Creative Director at Walt Disney Imagineering, explained, “It’s still about a family that built this amazing home together out of just their shared creativity and innovativeness.”

The treehouse kitchen is on the ground level. It has a picnic-style dining table on the left, and an elaborate stove in the back, next to a cabinet and some shelving. In the foreground is a seating area with a few mismatched wooden chairs arranged around a small, low table.

Meet the Family of Inventors and Dreamers

Each member of the fictional family contributes something unique to the treehouse. The father, an inventor and chef, created an automated kitchen powered by spring water. The mother, a talented musician, fills her room with instruments and music from a self-playing organ. Their daughter studies astronomy and paints what she sees, while her twin brothers explore the wonders of animals and plants.

The head of an ostrich is visible above a wall made of bamboo. This is the animated Jane, the family’s pet.

Returning Favorites and Hidden Details

Guests first encounter a bamboo-and-wood waterwheel, recreated from the original molds with help from the Walt Disney Archives. This waterwheel fuels many of the treehouse’s contraptions using bamboo pipes fed by a mystical spring. It’s a direct link to the original Swiss Family Treehouse. A fun nod to Tarzan’s Treehouse also appears with a pet ostrich named Jane.

Three paintings are lined up, each sitting on an easel, on a terrace or platform. From left to right, the paintings portray the twin boys’ nature-themed room, the daughter’s astronomy-themed room, and the mother’s music room.

Adventureland Treehouse Disneyland is a Multi-Level Exploration

The lower level showcases the father’s inventive kitchen and his nearby workshop filled with designs for future creations. Higher levels offer themed rooms for each family member. Guests will find the mother’s musical room with a self-playing violin, the daughter’s observatory featuring a telescope and a letter from the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (S.E.A.), and the boys’ lively hideaway with a swinging monkey and handcrafted birdhouses.

An elaborately carved and constructed pipe organ is automated to play on its own. Above the keyboard is the turning cylinder that determines the music to be played, and above that are pipes that appear to be made from bamboo. Behind and above the pipes are a self-playing violin and two tambourines. Various animal figurines stand in different positions around the instrument, including an elephant, a squirrel, and two cranes.

Visitors who stay on the ground can still enjoy the beautifully illustrated sketches and paintings that reveal what’s inside each room. Those who climb to the top are rewarded with panoramic views of Disneyland from the highest branches.

The daughter’s room is stuffed with astronomic paraphernalia. At the center is a large telescope, homemade from a small barrel and a sailor’s telescope. Around it are related objects, including a model of the solar system, a map of the night sky pinned to the wall, and much more.

The Story Lives On

The reimagined Adventureland Treehouse invites all guests to step into a story of innovation and imagination. Whether climbing for the first time or revisiting a favorite landmark, families can enjoy an immersive experience that blends storytelling with hands-on fun.

The twin boys’ room features their pet monkey, Rascal, hanging from the ceiling at the center; a toucan perched on the left; a series of birdhouses beyond the toucan along the left wall; and a frog incubator, partially visible on the right. Plants in pots also hang from the ceiling.

Guests can see that panoramic view again beginning Friday, November 10, 2023.
