A New Tale Beneath the Waves
Get ready to dive back into the underwater world of Finding Nemo! Opening June 13, 2022, at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Finding Nemo: The Big Blue and Beyond brings a fresh take on a fan-favorite stage show. We previewed the production in May during Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary media event, where we caught up with James Silson, show producer with Disney Live Entertainment.
A Different Perspective on a Familiar Story
This new version of the Nemo stage show retells the tale from a brand-new viewpoint—that of the fish from Dr. P. Sherman’s office in Finding Nemo. According to Silson, this gives the show a new energy, with the Tank Gang leading us on a comedic and heartfelt retelling of Nemo’s ocean journey.
Their escape from the dentist’s office, their travels across the sea, and their arrival at the Marine Life Institute (from Finding Dory) shape the framework of this revised musical.
A Multisensory Theatrical Experience
The production combines:
- Live actors
- Animated backdrops
- Striking sound and lighting effects
- Innovative stagecraft designed to mimic ocean environments
Silson explained that the creative team worked hard to balance practical effects and digital artistry to immerse guests in Nemo’s world. Every detail is crafted to evoke wonder—just like the film.
Musical Favorites Return
While the storyline has been updated, favorite songs remain, including “In the Big Blue World” and “Go With the Flow.” These tunes serve as musical anchors that blend nostalgia with the show’s new perspective.
The updated script and visuals are paired with these beloved tracks to maintain the emotional heart of the original while delivering something truly fresh.
