Disneys Sleeping Beauty Castle Construction photos

The Disney100 anniversary celebration is in full swing, and what better way to mark this milestone than with a look back at our Disney Parks castles? Starting with the debut of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park in 1955, we’re sharing a behind-the-scenes look at our six iconic centerpiece castles worldwide!

Disneyland Resort: Where the Magic Began

Walt Disney’s dream came to life in 1955 with the opening of Disneyland and the debut of Sleeping Beauty Castle. At just 77 feet tall, this charming fairytale structure was designed to feel welcoming and magical—unlike the towering, intimidating castles of Europe. Behind-the-scenes photos from spring 1955 reveal the castle taking shape only two months before opening day.

Walt Disney World: The Rise of Cinderella Castle

Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom was built in 1971 and stands 189 feet tall. Construction took 18 months, and workers used steel, cement, plaster, and fiberglass instead of traditional bricks. While it’s massive in size, the castle features Gothic and Romanesque touches that honor its European inspirations. Today, it glows with EARidescent colors and is fondly remembered for the birthday cake overlay during Walt Disney World’s 25th anniversary.

Tokyo Disneyland: A Familiar Favorite

Opened in 1983, Tokyo Disneyland’s Cinderella Castle was modeled after the Magic Kingdom version. Though it received a refreshed look in 2006, it maintains its timeless charm. As the first international Disney castle, it laid the foundation for a global legacy of magical icons.

Disneyland Paris: A Castle Like No Other

Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant opened in 1992 and is a bold reimagination of classic French fairy tales. Inspired by European landmarks, the castle combines Gothic spires, stained glass, and fantasy elements with distinct Disney flair. Be sure to spot the oval stained-glass window signaling royal presence, just like the French kings of old.

Shanghai Disney Resort: Enchanted Storybook Castle

In 2016, the largest Disney castle yet opened at Shanghai Disneyland. Enchanted Storybook Castle is a tribute to all Disney princesses, blending Baroque architecture with Chinese design elements. Look for peony patterns and Chinese cloud motifs on two of the castle’s seven soaring towers.

Hong Kong Disneyland: Reimagining the Icon

Originally opened in 2005 with a version of Sleeping Beauty Castle, Hong Kong Disneyland unveiled the Castle of Magical Dreams in 2020. Inspired by multiple princesses and queens, the castle’s turrets and towers reflect diverse stories and cultures. The setting against Lantau Island’s mountains creates a seamless blend of fantasy and nature.

Each castle tells a unique story—one of creativity, cultural celebration, and architectural magic. As part of the Disney100 celebration, these rare construction photos remind us of the incredible craftsmanship and imagination that went into building the heart of every Disney park.
