Disney’s Animal Kingdom Turns 25: A Celebration of Wildlife and Wonder

On Earth Day in 1998, Walt Disney World Resort guests experienced a theme park unlike any other—one inspired by the magic of nature. As Disney’s largest park, spanning more than 500 acres, Disney’s Animal Kingdom combined Walt Disney’s love of animals with thrilling attractions and groundbreaking storytelling. Now, 25 years later, we celebrate a park that continues to evolve and inspire.

A Park Rooted in Magic and Nature

From the iconic Tree of Life—featuring over 300 carved animals—to the glowing bioluminescence of Pandora – The World of Avatar, Disney’s Animal Kingdom blends real-world conservation with Disney magic. Guests enjoy awe-inspiring animal encounters, from African safaris to tiger trails, alongside top-tier entertainment like “Festival of the Lion King” and “Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!”

Animal Encounters and Enduring Experiences

Animal Kingdom is home to nearly 2,000 animals representing over 200 species. Behind the scenes, Disney’s expert teams—veterinarians, nutritionists, and conservationists—ensure every creature receives the highest level of care. In fact, around 45 of these animals have been part of the park since before opening day!

Conservation Impact Around the Globe

Over the last 25 years, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has expanded both its footprint and its influence. Through the Disney Conservation Fund, the company has invested over $125 million globally to support more than 1,000 species and protect 315 million acres of wildlife habitat. Locally in Florida, efforts include restoring coral reefs, monitoring sea turtle nests, and rehabilitating manatees.

Community Partnerships for a Healthier Planet

To celebrate this milestone, Disney recently donated $500,000 to five Florida-based conservation organizations: Conservation Florida, Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, Trout Lake Nature Center, and Wekiva Wilderness Trust. These grants support tree planting, clean water initiatives, land preservation, and youth education programs.

A Global Model for Animal Care

As a proud member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Animal Kingdom plays a leading role in species conservation. The park has welcomed new life from endangered species like Sumatran tigers, African elephants, and western lowland gorillas. The Animal Nutrition Center even serves as a model kitchen for other accredited zoos.

Looking to the Future

As we honor 25 years of storytelling, care, and conservation, we also look ahead. The mission of Disney’s Animal Kingdom remains steadfast: inspire awe, protect wildlife, and preserve our planet for generations to come.
