The History and Magic of World of Color – 2012 Edition

I can’t get enough of World of Color! It’s yet another reason for any Walt Disney World fan to visit the Disneyland Resort. The nighttime spectacular premiered on June 11, 2010, as part of the expansion of Disney California Adventure that began in 2007.

When I visited in 2012, the show was already a can’t-miss event.

Tech and Disney Magic Combine

World of Color 2012 is packed with cutting-edge features—more than 1,200 fountains, water effects, lights, lasers, fire, fog, and high-definition projections on mist screens. It reportedly cost $75 million to develop and took over 15 months to test and prepare.

Disney built the show with flexible technology, allowing for seasonal overlays and updates. Since launch, it has included new scenes featuring Pirates of the Caribbean, Tron, and festive Christmas moments. These updates keep the show fresh and tied to current Disney films.

Viewing Tips and What to Expect World of Color 2012

Like any major Disney nighttime show, World of Color draws a crowd. There’s no seating—it’s entirely standing-room only. Get your FASTPASS early, and don’t be surprised if you get wet—especially if you’re brave enough to stand close!

It’s ideal family entertainment, immersive and unforgettable.

Bonus Tips and History

Make sure to catch updated versions for special occasions like Disneyland’s 60th anniversary or the holiday season. And if you’re curious, learn the backstory of Mickey’s Fun Wheel, now renamed the Pixar Pal-A-Round, which frames the show perfectly.
