Disneyland’s Grand Opening Broadcast
On July 17, 1955, millions of Americans tuned in to witness the birth of a dream. The live television special, Dateline: Disneyland, aired coast to coast, introducing Walt Disney’s brand-new theme park in Anaheim, California. Hosted by Art Linkletter, with co-hosts Bob Cummings and future President Ronald Reagan, the broadcast was a milestone in both television and theme park history.
Walt Disney’s Dedication Moment
Throughout the special, Walt Disney appeared frequently as he visited the newly created lands of Disneyland. The most iconic moment came when Ronald Reagan introduced Walt for the official park dedication:
“And now, Walt Disney will step forward to read the dedication of Disneyland.”
That moment introduced the world to one of the most famous speeches in theme park history:
“To all who come to this happy place: welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past…and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts which have created America … with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.”
— Walt Disney, July 17, 1955
A Star-Studded Historical Moment
The special included parades, celebrity cameos, and walkthroughs of each new land: Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, and Frontierland. Despite technical hiccups and last-minute construction, the live broadcast created a sense of awe and anticipation across the nation.
So fun to see what has changed and what hasn’t!
