The 1991 Walt Disney World 4th of July special marked a significant departure, rebranded as Disney’s Great American Celebration. Hosted by Connie Sellecca and Robert Guillaume, it kicked off with Tevin Campbell’s performance of “Sweet Freedom” at Disneyland. Mickey’s coast-to-coast hot air balloon ride culminated at EPCOT Center’s American Adventure, featuring a marching band and beloved Disney characters.
The celebration showcased footage from three parades: Disneyland’s Celebrate USA Parade, the Main Street Electrical Parade, and Walt Disney World’s Disney Hit Parade. Honoring the 200th Anniversary of the Bill of Rights, it was a fitting tribute. Connie Sellecca also took on Disneyland’s mountain range during the event.
From the Neon Armadillo, the Country Music Club on Walt Disney World’s Treasure Island, the Kentucky Headhunters pay tribute to Davy Crockett with the Ballad of Davy Crockett followed up later in the show by “Spirit in the Sky”. From the Chinese Theater at Disney MGM Studios, we catch some former Mouseketeers in their new group, “The Party” with Peace, Love, and Understanding. We check in with Barbra Mandrell from Disneyland’s Frontierland.
“Roger Cam”, Roger Rabbit, checks in from Typhoon Lagoon and Mickey’s House in Walt Disney World while comedian Steven Banks is at EPCOT Center with a look at some historic political figures with a twist. Then we check in with comedian Tim Allen BB (before he was Buzz), and at the Disneyland Tomorrowland Stage, C & C Music Factory bring us, Here We Go Rock and Roll.
President George Bush makes an appearance to showcase American volunteers with what he calls Points of Light. The Great American Celebration took time to highlight these volunteers with Points of Light profiles throughout the televised special.
At Disneyland, Videopolos, the Disneyland teen club, the stage is set for Sheena Easton. Comedian Steven Banks takes a look at some historic political figures.
The Great American Celebration finishes with a coast-to-coast tribute to America from Disneyland and EPCOT’s American Adventure.
