Disney has quietly turned the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, better known as S.E.A., into an ongoing Disneyland mystery. What began at D23 2026 with a missing artifact has grown into a series of riddles and hidden clues. Furthermore, it involves a mysterious thief, and now a device that appears to explain how someone could be moving through different periods of Disney history.
The Disney Parks Blog revealed that S.E.A. Archivist Bonnie Booker has been following the trail after an artifact disappeared before it could be revealed at D23. The thief is leaving riddles tied to Disneyland, and each solved clue provides a letter. Those letters are scrambled, but once they are rearranged, they will reveal the name of a brand-new S.E.A. character.
That is where this gets interesting. Disney is not simply introducing a new character with a name and a backstory. Instead, Imagineering is letting us uncover that backstory one clue at a time.
First, What Is S.E.A.?
If S.E.A. sounds familiar but you cannot quite place it, that is part of the fun. The Society of Explorers and Adventurers is a fictional organization created through Disney Parks storytelling. Moreover, explorers, inventors, artists, scientists, and adventurers are connected across attractions around the world.
Characters such as Lord Henry Mystic from Mystic Manor, Harrison Hightower III from Tokyo DisneySea’s Tower of Terror story, and Dr. Albert Falls from Jungle Cruise lore have all become part of the larger S.E.A. universe. Over the years, Imagineering has connected those stories across parks, hotels, cruise ships, and attractions.
Now Disneyland is becoming the center of the next chapter.
The Mystery Started at D23
The story began with a mysterious S.E.A. crate that had supposedly remained unopened for more than a century. It was scheduled to be revealed during D23 2026, but when the crate was opened, the artifact was missing. In its place were bricks and a note from whoever had gotten there first.
That launched the current mystery. Bonnie Booker began sharing riddles through Walt Disney Imagineering, with fans asked to identify Disneyland locations and details hidden inside the clues. The first riddles pointed toward places including Main Street, U.S.A. and the Lilly Belle railroad car. Eventually, they produced the scrambled letters T, L, and A.
But the riddles also began revealing information about the thief. We learned that this person had apparently been rejected by S.E.A., may have stolen an artifact known as the Ridge Jewel, and somehow seemed capable of leaving clues across different periods of history.

The Ridge Jewel Leads to Rainbow Ridge
The biggest connection so far may be Rainbow Ridge, the frontier town associated today with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
A fictional S.E.A. newsletter dated March 1886 refers to the discovery of something called the Ridge Jewel near Rainbow Ridge. That immediately connects the new mystery to a piece of Disneyland history that goes back long before Big Thunder Mountain opened. Rainbow Ridge first appeared with the original Rainbow Caverns Mine Train in 1956. Later, it survived through Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland before becoming part of Big Thunder Mountain.
The newspaper clipping also mentions Jason Chandler, another S.E.A.-connected character with roots in early Imagineering concepts. That makes this more than a random scavenger hunt. Imagineering is reaching into Disneyland history, Big Thunder mythology, and existing S.E.A. lore to build the background of this new character.
Then the Mystery Added Time Travel
The strangest part of the story has always been the timeline. If the Ridge Jewel was connected to Rainbow Ridge in 1886, how could the same thief be leaving clues for us today?
The newest clues may finally answer that.
Imagineering has now revealed plans for something called the Timeskipper, a device that appears capable of moving through time. That changes the mystery considerably. Instead of asking how one character could be connected to different eras of Disneyland history, the better question may be when the thief has been operating.
That also gives Imagineering a very interesting storytelling tool. A character with access to the Timeskipper could theoretically appear anywhere in Disneyland’s timeline. In addition, they could connect old attractions, forgotten concepts, current locations, and pieces of S.E.A. history that were never originally designed to fit together.

Disneyland Is Becoming the Puzzle
That may be my favorite part of this whole thing.
The riddles are not just using Disneyland as a backdrop. Disneyland itself is becoming part of the puzzle. Main Street details, the Disneyland Railroad, Rainbow Ridge, Big Thunder Mountain history, and other park landmarks are being pulled into one continuing story.
You do not have to be at Disneyland to play along. Disney designed the riddles so fans can study photographs and research the park from home. However, knowing Disneyland history certainly helps.
It is also a clever way to introduce a new character. By the time we finally learn the thief’s name, we already know quite a bit about them. They were rejected by S.E.A. Additionally, they have some connection to the Ridge Jewel and apparently have access to technology that allows them to move through time.
That is a lot more interesting than simply publishing a character bio.
So Who Stole the Ridge Jewel?
We just don’t know yet.
The letters from the riddles remain scrambled. Imagineering is continuing to release clues through the Walt Disney Imagineering Instagram account. Eventually, those letters will reveal the thief’s name and officially introduce the newest character in the Society of Explorers and Adventurers.
But I am beginning to think the name may be the least interesting part.
Imagineering is using this mystery to connect Disneyland history, Big Thunder Mountain, Rainbow Ridge, S.E.A., and now time travel into one evolving story. Every new clue makes something we already know about Disneyland feel slightly different.
