Mama Odie Herself Visits Tiana’s Joyful Celebration in Indianapolis

Tiana’s Joyful Celebration received a little extra bayou magic this past week when Jenifer Lewis, the legendary voice of Mama Odie, toured the new traveling exhibit at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

It was Lewis’ first visit to the first-ever museum exhibit centered around Disney’s Princess Tiana. She is also featured inside the interactive experience, reprising her role as Mama Odie from The Princess and the Frog.

During her visit, Lewis sang, danced, and chatted with families exploring the exhibit, bringing her own “special spice” to the New Orleans-inspired celebration. Local coverage captured her reaction to the experience, with Lewis describing the exhibit as “magic” and “history.”

For Disney fans, that is what makes the moment stand out. Mama Odie is not just part of the exhibit. The performer behind the character stepped into the space and helped bring it to life.

Jenifer Lewis and Mama Odie’s Disney Legacy

Jenifer Lewis first voiced Mama Odie in Disney’s 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog and later reprised the role for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.  Known as the “Mother of Black Hollywood,” Lewis has also appeared in Black-ish, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Sister Act, Beaches, and many other film and television favorites.

Her visit to Tiana’s Joyful Celebration connects all three chapters of Mama Odie’s Disney story: the film, the parks, and now Disney’s first Princess Tiana museum exhibit.

Inside Tiana’s Joyful Celebration

Tiana’s Joyful Celebration debuted March 7, 2026, at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and runs through January 3, 2027. The exhibit was produced by Walt Disney Imagineering and The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

Inside the exhibit, guests move through hands-on areas inspired by Tiana’s New Orleans story:

At Eudora’s Chic Boutique, visitors design bead patterns, decorate Mardi Gras masks with Charlotte, create float costume designs, and add color to a mural activity tied to artist Malaika Favorite, who also designed artwork for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

The music section features Prince Naveen and the Bayou Community Band with percussion, rhythm activities, and Rara and Zydeco-inspired loops.

In the dance area, families learn second line steps and make pretend sno-balls with Mama Odie, choosing flavors that light up in bright colors.

The food section connects directly to Tiana’s family story. Visitors help prepare her daddy’s gumbo recipe, create hot sauce, explore a food-themed float hosted by Louis, and tend a children’s garden filled with vegetables and herbs.

Original Voices Add the Disney Connection

The exhibit features original voice performances from Anika Noni Rose as Princess Tiana, Jenifer Lewis as Mama Odie, Michael-Leon Wooley as Louis, Jennifer Cody as Charlotte La Bouff, and Bruno Campos as Prince Naveen.

That detail gives Tiana’s Joyful Celebration a stronger connection to both The Princess and the Frog and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. It is not a static display about Tiana. It is an interactive story experience featuring the voices Disney fans already know.

Important Note for Families

While Jenifer Lewis made a special visit, costumed characters are not part of the regular exhibit. Princess Tiana does not appear live in character.  Families should expect a hands-on museum experience, not a Disney Parks-style meet-and-greet.

Tiana’s Joyful Celebration Will Travel Nationwide

After Indianapolis, Tiana’s Joyful Celebration will begin a five-year national tour. Disney’s latest PR update lists future stops including Los Angeles in February 2027, Washington, Michigan, Atlanta, Fort Worth, Tampa, and more.

The fact sheet also lists museum partners including Discovery Cube Los Angeles, The Henry Ford Museum, Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, Children’s Museum of Atlanta, and Glazer Children’s Museum.

Sam’s Disney Diary Take

Jenifer Lewis visiting Tiana’s Joyful Celebration gives the Indianapolis exhibit a moment that feels bigger than a standard museum stop.

Tiana’s story has always been rooted in family, food, music, community, and determination. Mama Odie adds wisdom and joy to that world, and Lewis brings the character to life with a voice Disney fans instantly recognize.

With Mama Odie herself stepping inside the celebration, singing, dancing, and connecting with families, Tiana’s Joyful Celebration feels even more alive.  For Disney fans near Indianapolis, this is a rare chance to see Disney Imagineering storytelling in a museum setting. For everyone else, the five-year tour means Tiana’s celebration may be heading closer to home.
