Walt Disney turns 125 in 2026, and D23 marked the milestone with something far more personal than a traditional look back at his accomplishments. Instead of walking through a timeline of movies, theme parks and company milestones, Walt Disney: 125 Years of Inspiration brought together people who knew Walt, worked with him and grew up around him. Their stories gave us a glimpse of Walt Disney that history books and documentaries simply cannot recreate.
Walt Disney at 125: Stories From the People Who Knew Him | D23 2026
I was there for the full presentation at D23 2026, and this was one of those sessions I knew I wanted to capture from beginning to end. Walt’s granddaughter Joanna Miller joined Disney Legends Bob Gurr and Floyd Norman, former Imagineer Tania Norris, Walt Disney Archives Director Becky Cline and Bret Iwan, the official voice of Mickey Mouse. Together, they shared memories of Walt as a grandfather, a boss, a collaborator and, perhaps most importantly, a person who inspired those around him to keep pushing ideas forward.
You can read about Walt Disney almost anywhere. However, hearing these stories directly from the people who were there made this presentation feel different. It wasn’t really a history lesson. It was a collection of memories.
Celebrating Walt Disney 125 Years Later
Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901, making 2026 the 125th anniversary of his birth. D23 is recognizing that anniversary throughout the year, but this presentation focused less on what Walt created and more on the way he affected the people around him. That distinction became clear almost immediately.
Phat Cat Swinger opened the session with music before Bret Iwan took the stage to guide the conversation. Having the current voice of Mickey Mouse help host a celebration of Walt felt appropriate. Mickey and Walt will always be linked, and the presentation repeatedly returned to the optimism, curiosity and forward-looking spirit that both represent.
Becky Cline then helped set the historical context from the perspective of the Walt Disney Archives. Yet the tone changed when she welcomed Walt Disney’s granddaughter, Joanna Miller. Suddenly, the conversation wasn’t about the Walt Disney we know from television appearances, documentaries or company history. It was about Grandpa Walt.
Joanna Miller Remembers Grandpa Walt
Joanna Miller’s stories were some of my favorite moments of the entire presentation because they made Walt feel surprisingly ordinary. She remembered visiting the Walt Disney Studios with her siblings while her grandfather went to work. The children were left with an extraordinary playground around them, including movie sets, soundstages and areas of the studio most Disney fans today would give almost anything to explore.
One memory involved playing around the old Zorro set. Another took place while Mary Poppins was being produced. Miller recalled wandering through the studio and, during one childhood adventure, accidentally knocking over a carousel horse. Apparently, Walt never found out about that one. It was the kind of story that instantly changed the image of Walt from company founder to grandfather.
Her memories of Disneyland were equally revealing. Walking through the park with Walt meant guests naturally stopped him for photographs and autographs. Walt understood what meeting him meant to those visitors, but he also wanted to spend time with his grandchildren. So, according to Miller, he carried pre-signed pieces of paper that he could hand to guests as they approached him.
That small detail stuck with me. Walt was one of the most recognizable people in America, yet on those days he was also simply a grandfather trying to enjoy Disneyland with his family. He found a way to do both.
The Walt Disney His Employees Remembered
The conversation shifted again when Bob Gurr, Floyd Norman and Tania Norris joined the stage. Joanna Miller had given us Walt the grandfather. Now we were hearing about Walt the boss from people who actually worked around him.
Floyd Norman described a leadership style that relied heavily on questions. Walt might approach someone with an idea and ask what they thought about it. Then he would continue through the studio, asking other people similar questions. Before long, everyone was talking about the same idea. Eventually, those conversations could turn into a project.
That process fascinated me because it says a lot about the creative culture Walt was trying to build. Rather than simply issuing instructions, he encouraged people to think about an idea and become part of solving it. The best Disney projects have always depended on talented people from different disciplines working together, and Norman’s stories suggested that collaboration was very much part of Walt’s approach.
It also explains why so many people who worked with him still talk about those years with such emotion. They weren’t simply executing someone else’s vision. Walt made them feel as though they were helping create it.
Tania Norris and the Freedom to Create
Tania Norris brought another perspective to the conversation. Norris joined WED Enterprises in the 1960s and worked on projects that included New Orleans Square and the Haunted Mansion. Disney fans may know her work even if they don’t immediately recognize her name. She is closely associated with the famous purple wallpaper pattern inside the Haunted Mansion, a design that has become an attraction icon of its own.
However, Norris didn’t spend her time on stage simply listing attractions she helped create. Instead, she talked about Walt and the environment he created for the people working around him. She remembered him as a considerate boss who encouraged creativity and gave talented people space to develop ideas.
Again, that same theme surfaced. Walt had enormous ideas, but he also understood that he needed artists, designers, engineers and storytellers who could turn those ideas into something real. Disneyland wasn’t created by one person, and neither were the films that came from the studio. Walt’s talent included finding the right people and giving them something worth chasing.
Hearing Norris talk about that relationship gave another layer to the Walt Disney story. We often focus on the finished attraction. This panel reminded us to think about the creative conversations that happened long before guests ever walked through the gates.
Bob Gurr on the Walt He Knew
Then there was Bob Gurr.
I’ve heard Bob speak many times over the years, and anyone who has seen him at a Disney event knows he rarely has trouble entertaining a room. Still, his comments during this presentation had a different tone. Gurr remembered Walt as someone who spoke to people the same way regardless of their job title or position. There wasn’t one version of Walt for executives and another for the people doing the work. Walt was simply Walt.
As Bob talked about those years, the conversation became noticeably more emotional. That was one of the moments that stayed with me after the panel. More than 60 years later, you could still hear how much Walt meant to the people who worked alongside him.
We spend a lot of time discussing Walt Disney’s ideas. Mickey Mouse. Snow White. Disneyland. EPCOT. The list goes on. Yet the stories from Bob Gurr, Floyd Norman and Tania Norris showed another part of Walt’s legacy. People wanted to make his ideas happen because they believed in him.
That is difficult to measure on a spreadsheet, but it may be one of the biggest reasons those ideas became reality.
A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow
Of course, a celebration of Walt Disney needed a proper finale, and the presentation eventually arrived at “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.” Joanna Miller, Becky Cline, Bret Iwan, Bob Gurr, Floyd Norman and Tania Norris gathered together as Phat Cat Swinger helped close the session.
It could have ended as a wonderfully sentimental D23 moment.
Then Bob Gurr started dancing. At 94 years old, Bob managed to turn the finale into one of those completely unscripted D23 moments that makes you glad you kept the camera rolling. Everyone on stage was smiling, the audience loved it, and suddenly a presentation centered on Disney history ended with pure joy. Honestly, it felt perfect.
For an hour spent looking backward, the message of Walt Disney: 125 Years of Inspiration was really about moving forward. Keep creating, experimenting, asking questions, surrounding yourself with talented people. Most of all, keep believing there is a great big beautiful tomorrow.
Walt Disney’s Legacy Is Still About People
That may have been my biggest takeaway from the presentation. Walt Disney’s legacy isn’t only found in movies, theme parks, attractions or characters. It is also found in people. It’s Joanna Miller remembering a day at Disneyland with her grandfather, Floyd Norman remembering Walt walking through the studio asking questions. Tania Norris remembering the freedom to create, and it’s Bob Gurr becoming emotional while talking about a man he worked with more than six decades ago.
Most of us never had the opportunity to meet Walt Disney. Still, generations continue to feel connected to his ideas and the things he helped create. Hearing firsthand stories from people who actually knew him makes that history feel a little closer.
