Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 opens in theaters today, June 19, 2026. For families who saw the original Toy Story in 1995, this is a different kind of sequel. Many of the kids who first met Woody and Buzz are now bringing their own children to the theater.
That makes this new chapter especially timely. The original Toy Story changed animation forever as the first fully computer-animated feature film. Yet, at its heart, it was always a story about something wonderfully simple: the connection between a child and the toys that spark imagination.
Thirty years later, Toy Story 5 brings that idea into a very different world.
Toy Story 5 Brings Playtime Into a New Era
Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of Bonnie’s toy family return as a new kind of challenge arrives in her room.
Lilypad, a frog-shaped tablet device, is not just another toy. She represents the increasingly digital world surrounding Bonnie as she grows up, connects with friends, and discovers new interests.
That makes Toy Story 5 more than a simple toys-versus-technology story.
The real question appears to be how playtime changes when screens become part of childhood. Classic toys still matter. So do creativity, imagination, and connection. However, the world has moved forward, and the toys must figure out where they belong in it. That is a challenge many families will recognize.
Our earlier look at the Toy Story 5 characters introduced Lilypad, Bonnie’s changing world, and the new toys joining the adventure. Before that, the first Toy Story 5 trailer made one thing clear: Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the gang were finally back together.
The franchise has always been about change. Andy grew up. Woody found a new path. Bonnie became the next kid to love the toys. Now, Bonnie is older too, and the toy family is facing a new version of the same question: how do you stay important when a child’s world changes?
Jessie Takes the Lead
While Woody and Buzz are back together, Toy Story 5 is also an important chapter for Jessie.
Jessie is now the sheriff in Bonnie’s room, with Buzz serving as her deputy. When Bonnie’s relationship with playtime begins to shift, Jessie is the one leading the group through the uncertainty.
That is a meaningful change for the franchise.
Woody and Buzz remain the emotional foundation of Toy Story, especially after the ending of Toy Story 4. Still, putting Jessie at the center gives the new film a fresh point of view without leaving longtime fans behind.
Jessie has always understood what it feels like to be forgotten. Her story in Toy Story 2 remains one of Pixar’s most emotional moments. That history makes her a natural character to lead this new chapter.
The full reunion also carries added weight after Woody, Buzz, and the Toy Story 4 cast visited Toy Story Land during the last film’s release. Back then, the story was about Woody finding a new purpose. This time, the toys are trying to protect a version of playtime that is changing around them.
Disney Parks Already Show What Playtime Can Be
The message behind Toy Story 5 feels especially fitting at Disney Parks. Toy Story has never stayed on the movie screen. Over three decades, it has grown into attractions, lands, hotels, live entertainment, merchandise, and family experiences around the world.
At Walt Disney World, Toy Story Land gives guests the chance to step directly into Andy’s backyard. Slinky Dog Dash, Alien Swirling Saucers, and Roundup Rodeo BBQ turn the familiar world of the films into something families can experience together.
Toy Story Mania! may be the best example. It uses advanced technology, 3D games, and a trackless-style interactive experience. Yet the result is still simple: families competing, laughing, and playing side by side in Andy’s carnival midway.
That is the difference between simply watching a story and becoming part of it.
Disney is also celebrating the film’s opening with new park offerings. At Magic Kingdom, Jessie’s Roundup: A Rip-Roarin’ Revue brings Jessie, Woody, Bullseye, music, games, and dancing together inside The Diamond Horseshoe as part of Cool KIDS’ SUMMER.
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Woody’s Lunch Box is serving a new Lilypad Lunch Box Tart. New Toy Story 5 merchandise is also available at Jessie’s Trading Post and Store Command.
A Bullseye popcorn bucket is coming soon to both Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, giving guests another way to bring a little of the new movie home after a park day.
Play Does Not Have to Compete With Technology
The interesting thing about Toy Story 5 is that it comes from a franchise built on technology.
The first film was a major technical breakthrough. Pixar’s animation tools have evolved dramatically since 1995. The new film includes more detailed environments, complex character movement, and visual work that would have been impossible when Woody and Buzz first appeared on screen.
Yet the story is not celebrating technology for technology’s sake.
Instead, it appears to be asking families to remember that technology is only one part of a child’s world. There is still room for a favorite toy, a made-up game, a backyard adventure, or a family moment without everyone looking at a screen.
That does not make Lilypad a simple villain. Bonnie’s digital world can help her connect with friends. However, the challenge is finding balance and making sure imagination still has room to grow.
That is a thoughtful next step for a franchise that has always understood childhood better than most.
A Toy Story for the Next Generation
For longtime fans, Toy Story 5 offers the comfort of Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye, Forky, and the rest of the gang returning together.
For a new generation, it offers a story that understands the world they are growing up in. And for parents, it may be a reminder that playtime is not something children simply outgrow. It changes. It adapts. It can happen in a toy room, at a Disney park, during a family game, or in a quiet moment when everyone puts the devices aside and makes space for something else.
That is part of what has made Toy Story Land work so well since it opened. It is not simply a place to see familiar characters. It invites guests to feel like honorary toys, play together, and look at the world from a child’s perspective again.
Toy Story has always been about toys trying to remain important to the kids they love.
This time, the story is also asking families what kind of play they want to protect.
Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 is now playing in theaters.
